Widened Car Street formally opened for vehicle movement

Mangalore, February 4: Ahead of the annual 'car festival' of historical Sri Venkataramana Temple, the newly widened Car Street was formally opened for the vehicle transportation and pedestrians on Friday morning.

Speaking after inaugurating the road, Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat admitted that without the co-operation of local people, who gave up their properties for the sake of development and the struggle of officials and representatives from former Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj to local corporators, the ambitious plan of car street widening would not have been carried out successfully.

Stating that Rs 100 crore fund granted to Mangalore City Corporation by the Chief Minister paved the way for speedy accomplishment of the work, Mangalore North MLA also said that the furthermore promised grant of Rs 100 crore to MCC, will be utilised for the inner road widening and development under the Corporation limits.

He said that he has proposed many action plans pertaining to the development of his constituency and district in the pre budget meeting held recently, which includes extension of the runway of Mangalore airport and development of its surrounding roads.

Bhat also said that he has discussed with the Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa about widening the roads leading to the historical temples across this coastal district, which may contribute to the tourism development in the country.

MCC Commissioner KN Vijayaprakash said that the successful widening of Car Street within a short period has set an example for the road development in the entire country.

Recalling the earlier condition of the road stretch, he said if it was possible to widen Car Street, it is possible to widen and develop any road in the country. “The success story of Car Street widening will be discussed in the state and national arena too,” he added.


Mayor Rajani Dugganna, Deputy Mayor Rajendra Kumar and local Corporators were present.

Hubli, Feb 19: The Karnataka Police on Wednesday registered a case against unknown persons for assaulting three Kashmiri students in the court premises here.

A suo motu FIR has been registered at Vidyanagar police station of Hubli in which assault charges have been filed against 10 to 15 unknown people.

It can be recalled that on February 17 these three Kashmiri students were attacked in court premises after they were produced in court on charges of sedition.

The Kashmiri students were arrested here on February 15 after their video in which they are seen allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans went viral.

The students were studying at the KLE Institute of Technology on a central government scholarship.

Hubli, Mar 9: A Hubli court on Monday rejected the bail application of three Kashmiri students, who were booked for sedition, after their video allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans went viral.

The plea was filed under Section 439 of CrPC.

This comes after the Hubli Bar Association earlier withdrew its resolution against representing the three Kashmiri students and said that advocates who wish to appear for them can approach Dharwad Principal District Court to file bail plea.

The three students are Basit Ashik Sophi (19), Talib Majid (19) and Amir Mohiuddin (23). They were booked under sedition charges for raising pro-Pakistan slogan in a video shared on social media.

They were earlier transferred to Belgaum Hindalga jail from Hubli sub-jail and the case, registered in Gokul Road police station, was also transferred to the rural police station because the video was recorded in the college hostel room, which is in its jurisdiction.

Bengaluru, Jun 10: The Karnataka Anti-Corruption Bureau on Wednesday conducted raids at 14 places linked to four government officials in the state.

On receiving received credible information about the officials amassing disproportionate assets, an illegal assets case was registered and raids are being conducted at 14 places linked to them, ACB said in a release.

It said the raids are still on and investigation is being carried out about their assets.

Raids are being conducted on properties linked to L Sathish Kumar, Additional Commissioner, Department of Commercial Tax; N Ramakrishna, Divisional Forest Officer, Srinivasapura, Kolar; Gopalshetty Mallikarjuna, Executive Engineer, District Development Cell, Raichur; Raghappa Lalappa Lamani, Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Ltd official in Almatti, Bagalkote, the release said.
