Bengaluru, Nov 2: Hardline Hindutva crusader and Union Minister Anant Kumar Hegde received a rousing welcome at the launch of the BJP Parivartan Yatra in the city on Thursday.
This set off speculation in the inner circles of the party that he may be made the chief minister if the BJP gets a majority after next year's elections. This was prior to the arrival of the party's national president Amit Shah to inaugurate the rally.
However, the speculation was brushed aside by BJP leaders, who said 75-year-old B S Yeddyurappa was still their chief ministerial candidate and there was no change in it.
Hegde, who represents Uttara Kannada parliamentary constituency, is known for hate speeches and controversies.
In February 2016, Anant kumar Hedge had stated in a press conference in his constituency that Islam should be wiped out from the world. Police had registered a suo motu case against him for his provocative remarks.
In January 2017, the local police registered another suo motu case against Anant kumar Hedge for assaulting doctors and other staff of a private hospital in Sirsi town in his constituency. CCTV footage of him assaulting the doctors had gone viral.
