Will have to examine if resignations are genuine, says speaker after meeting rebel MLAs

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Karnataka assembly speaker K R Ramesh Kumar on Thursday said he would have to examine if the resignations by the ruling coalition MLAs were voluntary and genuine.

As per the Karnataka Legislature Rules, intended resignation should be "in perfect format," he told reporters after meeting the disgruntled legislators.

"Unfortunately, eight of the 13 letters that reached my office (last week) were not in the format," he said.

The speaker made it clear that he was neither responsible for the current political situation nor its outcome.

"MLAs have submitted resignation in right format now ... I will have to examine whether resignations are voluntary and genuine," he added.

The speaker said he had earlier informed the legislators that if they are so adamant to resign, they should resubmit their resignations in the prescribed form.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court had asked the speaker to decide "forthwith" on Thursday about the resignation of 10 rebel Congress-JD(S) coalition MLAs, and allowed them to meet him at 6 pm.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the decision taken by the speaker has to be intimated on Friday when the top court takes up the matter again.
The resignation of 16 MLAs, 13 from the Congress and three from the JD(S), has pushed the coalition government in Karnataka to the brink of collapse.

Two independent MLAs have also withdrawn support to the coalition government.

Bengaluru, Aug 3: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee working president Satish Jarakiholi on Sunday said that as per the party sources, state chief minister BS Yediyurappa has got only six months' time and there are different teams working against Yediyurappa in their party.

The BJP high command has decided to bring down Yediyurappa, Jarakhioli said. He added, "Yediyurappa had asked BJP high command to appoint him Chief Minister for six months and due to corona, his period has been extended. But now their own party sources have revealed that he has got only another six months."

While addressing the issue of different statements by BJP leaders and ministership aspirants after five MLCs were nominated, Jarakiholi said "Yediyurappa followers are not actual followers. BJP high command has already decided to bring down Yediyurappa as per their own party sources."

While speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, he said there are teams formed in the names of deputy CMs and there are many who are working in their party against Yediyurappa.

He also said that it's up to their party what they think about Yediyurappa's tenure, whether they keep him as CM or remove him. Being in Opposition, now Congress is only working on strengthening the party, he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 12: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwathnarayan on Wednesday said rumours that the state government has asked offices to remain closed tomorrow are false.

He clarified that the government has asked employers to explore the option of work from home amid the coronavirus scare.

"The rumours that the Govt has asked offices to remain closed tomorrow are false. We have asked employers to explore options of work from home for their employees. Let us be vigilant about this issue and not fall prey to any such rumours," Ashwathnarayan tweeted.

Meanwhile, Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi has cancelled all seminars, workshops or conferences in the premises in the wake of coronavirus spread.

"All the functions including seminars, workshops, conferences are to be cancelled. This is for urgent and necessary compliance," officials from the hospital said.

Bengaluru, Jul 21: Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah on Monday attacked the ruling government and said press conference of Health Minister B Siramulu was more like an exercise to hide facts than presenting proof with accurate data.

"Got to know about the press conference addressed by B Siramulu and Dr Ashwathnarayan CN to clear accusations of corruption. It looked more like an exercise to hide facts than presenting proof with accurate data," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

"It is still unclear about the points presented in the press conference. They have not answered any of my questions which were raised earlier. I will respond in detail once I receive the written explanation from the govt. Minister has claimed that both Health & Medical education department together have spent Rs323 Cr. But the data presented by them does not even add up to Rs100 Cr. What happened to the rest of the money?," asked Siddaramaiah.

He said that Centre has procured ventilators at Rs4 lakh per unit under PM Cares. But only in our state, the ventilators are procured at Rs12-Rs18 lakh per unit

"Prime Minister's Office has procured ventilators at Rs4 lakh per unit under PM Cares. But only in our state, the ventilators are procured at Rs12-Rs18 lakh per unit. Why do we see such a huge difference in price? Ministers, in the press conference, have told that quality & technological capabilities are the reasons for huge price difference. Does it mean ventilators under PM Cares lack quality? Why did they not present the technical specifications to justify the same?" he asked.

"Not just about the procurement of medical equipment, I had even asked data about food kits, PDS distribution, beds procured, quarantine centres & isolation wards. Where is the data for that?" he asked in a series of tweets.
