Will quit politics if 1% of the claims is true: Varun Gandhi

October 21, 2016

New Delhi, Oct 21: A US-based lawyer has alleged that his former business partner and controversial arms dealer Abhishek Verma "honey-trapped" BJP MP Varun Gandhi and some senior military officers with foreign sex workers to extractsensitive information about defence deals.

varunThe allegations have been made in two letters sent to PM Modi's office on August 25 and September 16 by lawyer-turned-whistleblower C Edmonds Allen, who has over the years supplied hundreds of documents to CBI and other agencies against Verma, an accused in the infamous Navy war-room leak of 2005 and other cases.

Purportedly backed with "CDs and photos of the MP with foreign prostitutes in compromising positions", the September 16 letter alleges that Verma and his associates "compromised" and blackmailed Varun Gandhi, who was then a member of the parliamentary consultative committee on defence, and possibly other MPs and their staff as well as some officers.

Making public documents sent by Allen in a press conference here on Thursday, except for "the sleazy photographic evidence", Swaraj Abhiyan leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav said their intention was to show how both the Congress and the BJP "participate in, collude with and protect each other in compromising vital national security interests".

They claimed that Thales, a company in the scorpene submarine project, had not been blacklisted as it would affect the deal for Rafale fighters. Rafale manufacturer Dassault controls Thales, said Bhushan.

Varun Gandhi strongly rejected all charges as "totally ridiculous", holding he would quit politics "even if 1% of all this" was true. "The entire information presented does not contain an iota of proof that either I had access or shared any communication regarding sensitive information to Verma," said Varun.

Verma, who had gained a dubious reputation as a big-time middle-man in Indian defence deals before being arrested under the Official Secrets Act in the war-room leak case in July 2006, also refuted the allegations. "Allen is a blackmailer...he has morphed the pictures," said Verma, who is out on bail.

Allen alleged there was "enough evidence" against Verma, his Romanian wife Anca Maria Neacsu, Air Marshal Harish Masand (retd) and others for having conspired to compromise Varun Gandhi and others to get vital information on defence deals for different arms manufacturers. One of the manufacturers mentioned is Hawker Beechcraft Corporation, which was in the running to get a contract for supplying trainer planes to IAF.

Swaraj Abhiyan said the war-room leak case, the Rs 18,000-crore deal inked in October 2005 with French companies for construction of six Scorpene submarines and the recent Rs 59,000-crore deal for 36 French Rafale fighters, were all inter-linked.

They alleged that Verma, son of a former Congress MP, was the middleman in the Scorpene deal but the then UPA government supressed a proper probe to "bury the case". The NDA government, after it assumed office in May 2014, also did not pursue the matter despite defence minister Manohar Parrikar himself recently admitting that commissions were paid in the Scorpene deal.

"The NDA government did not blacklist Thales (one of the main French companies in the Scorpene project). Any action against middlemen in the Scropene deal would have led to the blacklisting of Thales, which in turn would have jeopardised the recent Rafale deal. Thales is after all controlled by (Rafale manufacturer) Dassault," said Bhushan.

"Moreover, contrary to previous announcements of getting 126 aircraft, the government has now bought just 36 fighters by paying double the earlier price per unit," he added. The government should immediately order registration of an FIR against Verma and Thales in the Scorpene case as well as "come clean" on the price negotiations for the Rafale fighters from the beginning till the end. "The Rafale deal should be scrapped," he added.

New Delhi, Jun 7: A day after India and China military commanders held "cordial and positive" talks at Chushul-Moldo point along the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh, Ministry of External Affairs said the two countries have agreed to "peacefully" resolve the situation in the border areas by continuing the military and diplomatic engagements.

The Indian delegation led by 14 Corps Commander Lt Gen Harinder Singh on Saturday met his Chinese equivalent Maj Gen Liu Lin, who is the commander of South Xinjiang Military Region of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, to address the ongoing tussle in Eastern Ladakh.

In a statement on Sunday, the MEA said that the meeting between the Corps Commander based in Leh and the Chinese Commander took place in a "cordial and positive atmosphere".

"Both sides agreed to peacefully resolve the situation in the border areas in accordance with various bilateral agreements and keeping in view the agreement between the leaders that peace and tranquillity in the India-China border regions is essential for the overall development of bilateral relations," the statement read.

They also noted that this year marked the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and agreed that an early resolution would contribute to the further development of the relationship.

"Accordingly, the two sides will continue the military and diplomatic engagements to resolve the situation and to ensure peace and tranquillity in the border areas," it further read.

China has moved its troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Eastern Ladakh areas including the Finger area, Pangong Tso Lake, and Galwan Nala area.

The meeting between military commanders was to discuss and resolve the stand-off in Eastern Ladakh.

Following the meeting, the Army Headquarters' Directorate General of Military Operations also briefed the Ministry of External Affairs and other concerned government officials about the discussions.

On Friday, officials of India and China interacted through video-conferencing with the two sides agreeing that they should handle "their differences through peaceful discussion" while respecting each other's sensitivities and concerns and not allowing them to become disputes in accordance with the guidance provided by the leadership.

In the last few days, there has not been any major movement of the PLA troops at the multiple sites where it has stationed itself along the LAC opposite Indian forces.

The Chinese Army's intent to carry out deeper incursions was checked by the Indian security forces by quick deployment.

The Chinese have also brought in heavy vehicles with artillery guns and infantry combat vehicles in their rear positions close to the Indian territory.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 26: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday urged media houses not to resort to layoffs and pay cuts while the whole community is facing the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chief Minister said the state government will also take necessary steps to test the media personnel in the state to ensure they have not contracted the deadly virus.

He also pointed out that the pandemic has severely impacted the media sector with many newspapers even reducing the number of pages.

"Journalists are among those who have been affected the most. Journalists on the field are also in danger. We have come to know about the reporters affected with coronavirus in other states. The government will take necessary precautions including testing to ensure that journalists don't contract the disease," Vijayan said.

He said the newspapers were not receiving advertisements these days because there are no social or public events resulting in less commercial activities in the society.

"I would like to urge the media houses not to engage in layoffs or salary cuts during this pandemic. Journalists are working shoulder to shoulder with health workers. During this pandemic, scribes are out in the field collecting news, despite the threat of disease and it was admirable," Vijayan said.

The chief minister said the government has asked the PRD to release the dues to various media houses.

Hyderabad, Jun 27: Ahead nurse working with a state-run hospital here died on Friday while undergoing treatment for COVID-19, a hospital official said.

The nurse, who was due to retire this month-end, tested positive about 10 days ago, he said.

The woman, who had been on medical leave for about 20 days, is suspected to have contracted the virus when she attended a private function in a neighbouring district, he said.

She was treated at the hospital for two days after she was found positive for COVID-19.

However, she was shifted to another government hospital as the symptoms continued unabated and sugar levels were high, he said.

The woman, who had comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension, died today.

Meanwhile, about 20 healthcare personnel, including doctors and paramedical staff, have so far tested positive for COVID-19 at the state-run Gandhi hospital, according to a hospital official.

He also said that there are around 50 patients whose family members have not come forward to take them home though the patients can be in home quarantine.

Family members have cited reasons such as residents not allowing a positive patient to return to the villages and presence of children at residences, for not taking them home, he added.
