Wives, daughters of Congress leaders vying for LS poll tickets in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Feb 25: Wives, daughters, and relatives of the Congress leaders have been vying for party ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections, according to Karnataka Mahila Congress president Pushpa Amarnath.

She said that Asha Patil, wife of Home Minister M.B. Patil; Geetha Khandre, wife of KPCC working president Eshwar Khandre; Veena Kashappanavar, wife of former MLA Vijayananda Kashappanavar; Bayakka Meti, daughter of former Minister H.Y. Meti, and Vasantha Kavita, relative of the former Chief Minister late K.C. Reddy have been seeking ticket from the party.

Addressing presspersons here on Sunday along with AICC (Women’s wing) general secretary Apsara Reddy, Ms. Amarnath said she will demand that the party central leadership field a few women candidates in Karnataka. Ms. Reddy criticised the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign of the Union government and said the programme had not empowered the girl children or women.

Ms. Amarnath and Ms. Reddy said the Mahila Congress will take out a rally in Mangaluru on Tuesday to create awareness among women for highlighting the ineffective implementation of the BJP government’s policies towards women.

Mangaluru, Apr 25: In the backdrop of protest staged by locals against the cremation of a 75-year-old woman, who was tested positive for coronavirus, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B on Friday stated that there is no chance of anyone getting infected from a corpse.

Protocols, as laid by the Centre with regard to cremation of Covid-19 patients, will be followed, said Sindhu in a statement.

The release added that the COVID-19 victims would be buried as per their religious customs. Not more than 20 people would be allowed to perform the last rites. Even closest relatives of the deceased would not be allowed to touch or bathe the body, the release said.

Davanagere, Jun 15: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu was on Monday seen without face mask at an event in Davanagere amid COVID-19 crisis in the country.

The Minister was attending the wedding ceremony of son of former minister Parameshwar Naik at Hagaribommanahalli in Davanagere.

This is not the first time that Sriramulu has flouted the norms for preventing the spread of COVID-19. He took part in a procession in Chitradurga on June 2 and flouted social distancing norms. He was seen surrounded by several supporters while a big garland was being offered to him.

The state has reported 6,245 COVID-19 cases including 2,977 cured, 3,196 active cases and 72 deaths.

Bengaluru, Jul 17: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Mayor, M Goutham Kumar on Friday called for an extension of lockdown in the city for one more week due to rise in the COVID-19 cases.

"It will be better if we get more time to tackle COVID-19 cases, we wish for the extension of lockdown for one more week. We have given the proposal to the government," said M Goutham Kumar, BBMP Mayor.

"After the number of cases increased in Bengaluru, BBMP started antigen test in containment and hotspot zones of Bengaluru to tackle the cases which have crossed 2,000 mark," he added.

Along with Mayor, BBMP Commissioner Anil Kumar has also proposed the state government to extend lockdown in Bengaluru for one more week.

"The number of cases in Bengaluru increasing in Bengaluru rapidly. BBMP has inaugurated more than 200 vehicles in Bengaluru for the use of the antigen test," said Anil Kumar, Commissioner BBMP.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there are 51,422 COVID-19 cases in the state.
