Woman fails to remove seat belt, charred to death in burning car

Kalaburagi, Dec 6: A 39-year-old woman from Hyderabad was charred to death when the car she was travelling in along with her husband and their two children suddenly caught fire in Bidar district on Thursday morning.

Kalyan Uday Kumar Naidu was said to be suffering from a spinal-cord injury and she had been to Udagir in Maharashtra to seek help from an ayurvedic practitioner. The accident occurred at Nirna Cross, near Humnabad in Bidar district, when the family was returning to Hyderabad.

Police said the woman couldn't remove the seatbelt and hop out of the burning car because of the spinal-cord injury. Her husband is Uday Kumar, 48, a share-market adviser in Hyderabad, and their children are Kumar, 10, and Gagan, 7.

Chitaguppa police officer Sharanabasappa Bajantri told TOI the family stayed in Humnabad in the night before resuming the journey to Hyderabad in the morning. Uday stopped his car - a Hyundai Santro - at a petrol station for refuel.

Since it was unusually cold in the morning, he switched on the heater in the car and drove for about 10km only to find smoke coming out of the bonnet.

Uday pulled the car to the kerb and got down to inspect the engine. His children followed him, leaving Kalyan in the car. Within seconds of Uday opening the bonnet to find the source of the problem, the engine suddenly erupted in flames, which raced through all electrical circuits and devices reducing them to cinder. As they watched in horror, the flames engulfed rest of the car, trapping Kalyan alive.

A nearly immobile Kalyan couldn't unlock the seatbelt or the door. Uday and children shouted for help from passersby, besides calling in ambulance, fire services and police. But it was too late. Police have registered a case and sent the body for autopsy.

Kasaragod, Apr 3: Kerala reported nine new cases of coronavirus on Friday, with seven from the worst affected Kasaragod district, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

With this, the total number of coronavirus positive cases in the coastal district alone mounted to 136.

Besides, Kasaragod, one case each was detected from Thrissur and Idukki, he told reporters after a COVID-19 review meeting this evening.

Currently, 251 people are under treatment for the virus in the state and 14 were cured today, Vijayan said.

A total of 1.69 lakh people are under surveillence in the state and 706 are in various hospitals.

Two fatalities have been reported from the state so far.

Udupi, May 2: During the lockdown period the Department of Public Library digitised more books to the Karnataka Digital Public Library (KDPL).

According to the data released by the KDPL issued here on Saturday , as on April 29, 89,239 people from the State have already registered for the digital library.  From these 1,807 are from Dakshina Kannada district and 605 from the Udupi district.

The digital library already has a repository of 35,500 e-books, 4,800 videos, 59,980 e-journals and 1,112 items for children.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: In what is suspected to be the second COVID-19 death in Karnataka, a 70-year-old woman from Gouribidanuru, who was under house quarantine for the last one week has died at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital for Chest Diseases.

The woman, who had recently returned from the Mecca pilgrimage developed fever on Tuesday afternoon. She was rushed to hospital, where she died on Wednesday morning.

Health and Family Welfare officials said that the throat swab sample of the woman had been sent to the laboratory for testing and the result was expected to come by afternoon.

Since last week, at least three cases of COVID-19 positive had been reported in Gouribidanuru in Chikkaballpura district, about 80 kms from Bengaluru.

Most of the suspects and confirmed cases had returned from Makkah pilgrimage. Even the deceased woman was one of them and had been advised house quarantine.

On Tuesday morning, she developed fever and was shifted to Gouribidanur hospital and later to Chikkaballapura hospital. By evening, she was moved to Rajiv Gandhi hospital, where she died on Wednesday morning.

The Chikkaballapura district administration has proclaimed prohibitory orders in the locality. They have also taken the woman's family members for testing.
