Woman marching for liquor ban knocked to death by motorbike

Bengaluru, Jan 29: A 55-year-old-woman marching towards the city from Chitradurga, demanding a ban on liquor, died after a speeding motorbike hit her near Kuluvanahalli, Nelamangala, on NH 48 on Sunday evening.

Renukamma, a resident of Khairavadagi village in Lingasugur taluk, Raichur district, was among the 2,500 women who are marching towards Bengaluru from various parts of the state.

Around 10pm, Renukamma was about to cross the road after having dinner. “A motorbiker rammed Renukamma and sped. She was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to injuries early Monday,” Nelamangala police said.

Convenor of the movement Vidya Patil said Renukamma was part of the campaign for five years and had a physically challenged daughter who was dependent on her.

Nelamangala traffic police have arrested the two-wheeler rider.

The march, under the aegis of Madya Nisheda Andolana, started from Chitradurga on January 19. The women are set to reach Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday. On Sunday, women from Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Ramanagara and Chamarajanagar joined the protesters.

Most protesters are from agricultural background and claim their families have been destroyed due to alcohol addiction of their menfolk. Around 15 nurses in four ambulances are following them.

“Food and shelter have been arranged at religious places. On Sunday, we visited Siddaganga mutt and spent the night there. On Monday, we are halting at Madanayakanahalli,” Shanta Bai, a resident of Janakal, near Hosadurga, said.

The women from across 23 districts cover 20km every day and stay in villages where they create awareness among women on ill effects of liquor. They have passed through Kyadigere, Hosuru, Nityananda ashram, Javagondana Halli, Tavara Kere, Sira, Chikkanahalli, Dodda Alada Mara Cross, CB Temple, Darga Bellavi Cross, Tumakuru, Siddaganga mutt, Adichunchanagiri mutt and Kuluvanahalli.

On Sunday, Kannada writer Devanooru Mahadeva and social worker SR Hiremath wrote to chief minister HD Kumaraswamy demanding ban on liquor.

Hassan, July 31: A police sub-inspector (PSI) reportedly hanged himself at his official quarters in Channarayapatna town today morning.

The deceased has been identified as Kiran Kumar, 34, who was in charge of Channarayapatna rural police station.

Sources said that he was upset after two murder cases were reported in the last 24 hours in his limits. Kiran reportedly told colleagues an hour before the extreme step that he feared he would be suspended.  

According to locals, the SI was upset after news of the two murders due to alleged negligence of the police spread on social media. He killed himself before a visit by senior officials. IGP, southern range, and SP Srinivasagowda was planning to visit the town and the spots where the murders took place on Friday.

Kiran, a native of Lalanakere village in Arsikere taluk, was known for his rapport with local people. He was alone when the incident took place. His wife and children had gone to Lalanakere for the Varamahalakashmi festival on Thursday night. The body was shifted to the mortuary for a postmortem.

New Delhi, Apr 26: The Centre will bring back the Indian citizens stranded abroad due to the ban on arrival of international passenger aircraft, only if the respective states they belong to agree to allow them to come back home and make necessary arrangements to quarantine them after their return.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has started consultations with the State Governments on bringing back the Indians, who got stranded in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada and many other foreign countries due to the ban on arrival of international passenger aircraft to any airport in the country. The decision on facilitating their return to the country would be taken after getting feedback on preparedness of the States and the Union Territory to receive them following all required health precautions, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba said.

Gauba on Saturday had a video-conference with the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories to review the implementation of the restrictions on travel and transport as well as the lockdown imposed across the country to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though the Government earlier either evacuated or facilitated the return of nearly 28000 Indians from a number of foreign countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, it almost stopped doing so after the ban on arrival of international passenger aircraft was enforced on March 23 in the wake of the spurt in the number of COVID-19 cases in India.

Thousands of Indian students, tourists, professionals and others are stranded around the world, including in the countries, where respective governments had imposed lockdowns to contain the pandemic. They have been desperately requesting the government on social media to evacuate them.

Bengaluru, May 30: People travelling to Bengaluru by flight or train must pay to get their Covid-19 tests done at designated private labs.

This is being done to improve the participation of private labs that have been approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research to do testing. Many of these labs are running at sub-optimal levels.

The new rule will also help the special categories of passengers and their attendants to leave early for home quarantine after giving the sample once the swab collection centres are established at airports and railway stations. The nodal officers at these places will coordinate in establishing the swab collection centres.

Each test will cost Rs 650 per sample. XCyton Diagnostics will cater to air passengers. Rail passengers will be tested at Neuberg Anand Reference Laboratory, Cancyte Technologies Pvt Ltd, Aster Labs, Narayana Hrudayalaya, Vydehi Hospital and Syngene International Ltd.
