Woman run over by bus on poll duty

Mudigere, March 18: A 38-year-old woman was killed when a KSRTC?bus, on duty for Sunday’s byelection to the Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency, ran over her in the town on Saturday.

Renukamma was riding pillion on a two-wheeler which her husband, Gurusiddappa, was driving when the bus - which was on its way to the DSBG?first grade college to pick up poll personnel - hit the two-wheeler. The woman fell down and came under the wheels of the bus. Gurusiddappa is a college lecturer and is a resident of Hesagal Vidyanagar.

Members of the public, including students, held a protest for two hours soon after the accident and demanded that the election be countermanded, compensation be paid to the next of kin of the deceased and bus driver Suresh be dismissed from service. The said they will not allow the body to be removed from the spot if the KSRTC?depot manager does not visit the spot and offer compensation. Police had to intervene to bring the tense situation under control.

Superintendent of Police Shashikumar, DySP Dr Vedamurthy and other officials promised that proper compensation would be paid and requested that the poll process be allowed. When the protestors refused to budge, the body was transported to the hospital under police protection. Finally, an interim relief of Rs 50,000 was paid to the kin of the deceased.

Kozhikode, Jul 20: A 17-year old boy died of head injuries while trying to protect his mother from being assaulted by his drunk father here, police said on Sunday.

The youngster suffered the fatal injury after his head hit against the door when his father shoved him at their home on Saturday. Venu, had come home in an inebriated state and picked up a quarrel with his wife and started beating her up, they said.

On seeing this, Alan tried to intervene. Though the boy was rushed to the hospital, his life could not be saved, they added. Venu was arrested and a case has been registered.

Thane, Apr 24: A 34-year-old man was allegedly attacked on suspicion of being a COVID-19 patient and died after falling into a gutter during the assault in Kalyan town of Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning, when Ganesh Gupta had stepped out of his home to purchase some essentials amid the COVID-19 lockdown, an official said.

On noticing some policemen manning the street, the victim took an alternate route, where a few passersby assaulted him after he coughed while walking, he said.

The men suspected him of being a COVID-19 patient and attacked him, causing him to fall into a gutter and die, the official said.

The deceased's body was sent for post-mortem and a case of accidental death has been registered as of now, the station house officer of the Khadakpada police station said.

Thrissur, Jun 11: Volunteers of People for Animal Welfare Services rescued a dog that had its mouth sealed with insulation tape around it for two weeks in Ollur of Thrissur district.

The dog has now been shifted to an animal shelter home.

Recently two elephants died in Kerala. One pregnant elephant died after consuming crackers wrapped in some fruits in Palakkad.

Another elephant died in Malappuram after it was found seriously injured in North Nilambur forest range of the district.
