Mumbai, Jul 24: The death of a 35-year-old biker, Jagruti Hogale, at the Jawhar-Dahanu highway in Palghar district, nearly 130 kms from downtown Mumbai, has raised the issues of safety on roads during monsoon as potholes crop up often and remain unattended.

Jagruti, a resident of Kalanagar in Bandra-East, is survived by husband Viraj and son Harshit. She was a biker, a trekker and marathon runner, had learnt to ride motorbike around three years ago. She was part of the Bikerni Biker Club - that used Bullets. She was also associated with the Morya Dhol Tasha Pathak and was active in social circles.

On Sunday morning, when she was part of a group riding from Mumbai to Jawhar, she was crushed under the rear wheel of a truck at Vaiti village on the Jawhar-Dahanu highway while avoiding a pothole on the road. All the bikers had their helmets and other gear on while riding. She was riding a Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350.

"Because of rains at that time she might not have noticed the pothole," said Assistant Police Inspector of Jayprakash Gute of Kasa police station. The local police has registered the statements of co-bikers Mrunal Nair and Dnyada Maskar, both residents of Navi Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the issue of safety on roads and the problems during monsoon is all set to be discussed during the monsoon session of Maharashtra legislature, that commenced on Monday.

"The Mumbai civic body, the other civic bodies around Mumbai and other agencies need to ensure that roads are potholes free. But that does not happen as they are interested in corruption," NCP MLC Vidya Chavan said. "We all are of the opinion that such things should not happen," BJP MLA Manda Mhatre said.
