Women inmates allegedly forced to have sex with male convicts in Bangalore Central jail

November 15, 2014

Women inmatesBengaluru, Nov 15: In shocking revelations emerging from inside the Bangalore Central jail, two letters have surfaced which allege that women inmates at the jail were forced by their jail wardens to have sex with male inmates. In turn the male inmates paid the jailors for this service.

The letters that have come to light, though don't have a date but are suspected to have been written nearly ten months ago. The anonymous letters addressed to the High Court were supposedly found in a complaint box set up by the court in the jail premises.

The letters allege that wardens took Rs 300 to 500 rupees from male inmates, to supply them with women inmates. The women prisoners claim they would even be refused parole if they didn't fall in line with the demands of jail staff.

Jail officials, however, refute the allegations saying that the complaint is totally fabricated and two of the women wardens named in the complaint have even been transferred more than five months ago.

While complaining that they are asked for money for supply of basic amenities like soap and are harassed by women wardens and supporting staff, the inmates further said that they are not even allowed to meet their relatives if they don't give bribes to the jailors.

The Parapana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru has seen many high-profile inmates including BS Yeddyurappa. The latest high-profile inmate is former Tamil Nadu Chief Minster J Jayalalithaa.

Karnataka Home Minister KJ George has sought a report on the allegations. "So far I have not received any complaint. I have requested the Additional Chief Secretary Home department to conduct an enquiry. I have also requested he Women and Child departent to conduct an enquiry. We have asked for a report within 15 days. As soon as the report comes, we will take an action," he said.
