World rallies behind KSA

Riyadh, May 31: The US on Saturday joined Gulf and Arab countries in denouncing the terror attack in Dammam, saying that it was committed to working with the Kingdom to fight extremism.

“We deplore the brutality of the terrorists who perpetuated this violence at places of worship,” said US State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke, in response to Friday’s attack at the Al-Anoud Mosque in Dammam.

Three people and an IS suspect who exploded the bomb in the parking area after being stopped by security men from entering the women’s section of the mosque were killed.

“The US stands with the people of Saudi Arabia against this violence and remains committed to working with the Saudi government and our international partners to fight violent extremism in the region,” Rathke added.

Ban Ki-moon, UN secretary-general, too strongly condemned the attack, asserting that such attacks on places of worship are “abhorrent” and are intended to promote sectarian conflicts.

Sheikh Salman bin Mohammed Al-Nashwan, spokesman of Supreme Judicial Council, condemned the attack and said that such incidents aim at spreading chaos and violence.

The Federal National Council (FNC) of the UAE also denounced the attacks that targeted the mosques in Qatif and Dammam and called for “joint and intensified efforts at all levels to counter such cowardly acts.”

Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, FNC spokesman, reiterated the UAE’s full support to the Kingdom in its fight against terrorism.

Iyad Madani, secretary-general of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), said the terror acts showed the ugly face of IS, which has claimed responsibility.

“Such malicious schemes would not succeed in destabilizing the social fabric in the Kingdom; it will rather strengthen the will of the people to be united.”

The board of trustees of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) held a meeting to condemn the terrorist acts in Saudi Arabia.

The Arab interior ministers’ council denounced the terror acts and expressed support to the Kingdom to combat terrorism.

Egypt, Turkey, Qatar, Sudan, Oman and Kuwait strongly condemned the mosque bombing.

The foreign ministries of these countries expressed their condolences to the Saudi government, people and the families of the martyrs, and wished for speedy recovery for those injured in the attack.

Sharjah, Aug 3: A 24-year-old Indian engineer has fallen to death from the sixth floor of a residential building on Eid al-Adha in the UAE's Sharjah, a media report said on Monday. 

The electrical engineer, identified with his single name Sumesh, hailed from the south Indian state of Kerala.

He lived in a building in Al Dhaid in Sharjah, from where he fell to death on Friday, the report said, adding that he was apparently talking over the phone and threw it down minutes before the incident.

Sumesh, who came to the UAE a year ago, worked as a designer in Sharjah's Muwaileh area. His roommates said that he had some "personal issues" that had been "bothering him for some time", according to the report.

"It was Eid al-Adha and our cook had made biryani for us. We were all cracking jokes and having a good time. In fact, even Cuckoo (Sumesh) was also laughing with us. He seemed happy. Nobody had anticipated this. I did sense a few times that something was troubling him and I even asked him about it, but he brushed it off," the report quoted his roommate Dileep Kumar as saying.

Shans KF, another roommate, said Sumesh was to travel to India for his annual leave but could not because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The police have launched an investigation and moved the body to the forensic lab for an autopsy.

Dubai, Apr 15: Saudi Arabia reported 493 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 5869, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday.

According to the ministry of health, the number of recoveries today are 42 cases, making total of recoveries in the kingdom 931. And 71 critical cases in intensive care.

The ministry also confirmed 6 deaths bringing the total number of deaths in the kingdom to 79.

Saudi Arabia imposed a 24-hour curfew and lockdown on the cities of Riyadh, Tabuk, Dammam, Dhahran and Hofuf and throughout the governorates of Jeddah, Taif, Qatif and Khobar. This week the curfew was extended until further notice.

Overall, Saudi Arabia has reported one of the lowest rates of infection in the region, with around 5,000 cases in a population of over 30 million. Mecca was one of the first Saudi cities to be placed under a full-day curfew, and authorities took unprecedented precautions, suspending religious tourism in February and closing mosques across the country in March.

Iraq’s deputy parliament speaker Hassan Karim al-Kaabi on Saturday described the move as provocative and in violation of international law.

Kaabi also called on the Iraqi government to take swift measures to halt such actions.

The Embassy’s move to fire in a residential area in the heart of Baghdad is an unacceptable act and another challenge for the Arab country, adding to the mass of its provocations and illegal actions in Iraq, he noted.

According to Iraqi media, the US tested a patriot missile system inside Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone.

Anti-US sentiments have been running high in Iraq since Washington assassinated top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani and the second-in-command of the Iraqi popular mobilization units, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, in January.

Following the attack, Iraqi lawmakers unanimously approved a bill on January 5, demanding the withdrawal of all foreign troops.

Baghdad and Washington are currently in talks over the withdrawal of American troops. Iraqi resistance groups have vowed to take up arms against US forces if Washington fails to comply with the parliamentary order.
