World’s engagement with India at ‘new level’: Modi

March 14, 2015

Colombo, Mar 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said global confidence in India has been restored and the world’s engagement with the country is at a “new level” even as he assured Sri Lanka that steps would be taken to address its concerns over the huge bilateral trade imbalance.

Mr. Modi said this while asserting that India and Sri Lanka should move “boldly” to conclude a long pending Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Stating that Sri Lanka has the potential to be India’s “strongest economic partner” in the region, Modi said it should not worry about India’s economic size.

In his address to Sri Lanka’s business community at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce in Colombo on Friday night, the Prime Minister acknowledged that there were concerns in Sri Lanka about the huge trade imbalance.

“I am prepared to work with you to address them. I want balanced growth in trade. We will try to make it easier and smoother for you to access the Indian market,” he said on the first day of his two-day visit to the country, the first by an Indian Prime Minister since 1987.

Sri Lanka is India’s major trading partner in South Asia.

The bilateral trade between India and Sri Lanka in 2013-14 was $5.23 billion with Indian exports amounting to USD 3.98 billion and Sri Lankan exports amounting to $678 million.

“I often say that a nation’s fortunes are linked to its neighbourhood. There are many in India who would argue that India is too large to need her neighbours.

“There are many in our region who worry that India’s economic size will hurt them. I disagree with both views. For one, we all need a stable and peaceful neighbourhood to concentrate on national development,” he added.

“There are already powerful examples in South Asia that show us that differences in size is no constraint to beneficial partnerships, if we use our strengths and seize our opportunities”.

The Prime Minister said India is opening up to the world and have Free Trade Agreements with ASEAN and others.

Underlining the need to expand the ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that was signed in December 1998, Modi said India will take all necessary measures to ensure that Sri Lankan goods enter Indian markets smoothly.

“We should ensure that Sri Lanka does not fall behind in the changing and competitive world. That is why India and Sri Lanka should move boldly to conclude a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement,” he said.

“You should also attract investments from India for exports to India. That should be the natural outcome of our proximity and your strengths,” he added.

Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Suresh Shah while referring to the already existing Free Trade Agreement between Sri Lanka and India said, “CEPA has been on the backburner in Sri Lanka. This is partly due to politics and partly due to concerns on the part of some sections of the Lankan business community who perceive a playing field tilted in favour of their Indian counterparts.”

Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena while addressing local Sri Lankan businesses recently said, “I want to assure you that I will not enter any agreement with any country that will be harmful to our businesses.”

The CEPA begun initially in 2003 is yet to be implemented by Sri Lanka and India. The majority of the Sri Lankan business community and professional bodies were not convinced about the benefits from a CEPA. They were of the opinion that a bilateral agreement between a small country and a large country is bad news for the small country.

New Delhi, Jul 20: Reiterating that China has still occupied India's territory, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that he has fabricated a fake strongman image to come to power which has now become India's biggest weakness as he has to protect the idea of 'Chhapan Inch'.

Taking to Twitter, the Congress leader posted a video message and wrote, "PM fabricated a fake strongman image to come to power. It was his biggest strength. It is now India's biggest weakness."

In the video message, speaking on "China's Strategic Game Plan" the Congress leader said: "What is China's strategic and tactical game plan? It is simply not a border issue. The worry I have is that the Chinese are sitting in our territory today. Chinese don't do anything without thinking about it strategically."

"In their mind, they have mapped out the world and they are trying to shape the world. That's the scale of what they are doing. That's what Gwadar is, that is what belt and road is. It is a restructuring of the planet. So when you are thinking about the Chinese you have to understand that that is the level at which they are thinking," he added.

Now at the tactical level, they're trying to improve their position. Whether it is Galwan, whether it's Demchok or whether it is Pangong Lake. The idea is to position themselves, he said.

"They are disturbed by our highway they want to make our highway redundant and if they are thinking larger scale, they want to do something with Pakistan in Kashmir. So it is not simply a border issue. It is a border issue designed to put pressure on the Prime Minister of India," the Congress leader said.

"And they are thinking of putting pressure in a very particular way. And what they are doing, is that they are attacking his image. They understand that it in order for Mr Narendra Modi to be an effective politician; in order for Mr Narendra Modi to survive as a politician, he has to protect the idea of--Chhapan Inch. And this the real idea the Chinese are attacking. They are basically telling Mr Narendra Modi that if you do not do what we say, we will destroy the idea of Mr Narendra Modi as a strong leader," he added.

Gandhi continued saying, now the question is, how will PM Narendra Modi react. Will he take them on? Will he take on the challenge and say absolutely not, I'm the Prime Minister of India. I do not care about my image I'm going to take you on. Or will he succumb to them?

"The worry I have so far is that the Prime Minister has succumbed. The worry I have is, the Chinese are sitting in our territory today and the Prime Minister has said publicly they are not, which to me tells me that is worried about his image and defending his image," said Gandhi.

"And if he allows the Chinese to understand that they can manipulate him because of his image, the Indian Prime Minister will no longer be worth anything for India," he added.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 27: BJP's Kerala state President K Surendran on Monday said it is 'highly irresponsible' of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to not attend PM's video conference with all chief ministers on prevailing COVID-19 situation earlier today.

"The Kerala Chief Minister not attending the important conference regarding a pandemic in the country is not good for the state," Surendran said.

The BJP state President believes Vijayan has sent a wrong message by not attending the conference.

"It is the irresponsible behavior of the Chief Minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that team India is fighting this pandemic together. By not attending the meeting, the Kerala CM has sent a wrong message, " he added.

Surendran said that the meeting was of high priority as PM was meeting the state CM's regarding the important decision of lockdown in the country.

"From the last meeting, many things have changed. Other chief ministers who did not get a chance to speak, participated in the meeting. But Kerala CM chose not to attend the meeting and BJP condemns it, " he said.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan had not participated in the PM's video conference held earlier today and instead Kerala Chief Secretary Tom Jose represented the state in the meet.

According to sources, Kerala has given its suggestions in writing.

This was the fourth such interaction of the Prime Minister with the Chief Ministers, the earlier ones had been held on March 20, April 2, and April 11.

PM Modi in the meeting said the lockdown has yielded positive results as the country has managed to save thousands of lives in the past one and a half months.
