Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt confirms upgrade to silver for London Olympics

August 30, 2016

New Delhi, Aug 30: After a disappointing first-round exit at Rio Olympics, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt has something to cheer about.

The bronze he won at the London Games was upgraded to silver after Russia’s Besik Kudukhov’s, who finished second in the 60-kg freestyle event in the 2012 Olympics, tested positive for a banned substance, reports said Tuesday.

In a tweet, Yogeshwar Dutt confirmed that his medal has been upgraded from bronze to silver. However, there has been no official confirmation yet.

India headed into last month’s Rio Games with doping cloud hanging large over its head. The embarrassment was complete after medal hope Narsingh Yadav was handed a four-year ban barely 12 hours ahead of his opening bout, overturning an all-clear given to the wrestler by the country’s anti-doping agency.

According to Russian agency flowrestling.org, the four-time world champion and two-time Olympic medallist Kudukhov, who died in a car crash in 2013 in southern Russia, has been stripped off the silver medal.

In the run-up to the Rio Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in keeping with new rules, re-tested Kudukhov samples collected at London, reports said.

Under revised norms, samples are now stored for up to 10 years to allow the use of advanced tests to weed out dope cheats. The deadline for re-tests was eight years from the year of collection of samples but the IOC extended it by two years in 2015.

“The samples of five wrestlers, including Russia’s Besik Kudukhov (60 kg) and Uzbekistan’s Artur Taymazov’s (120 kg), have tested positive for banned substances. Kudukhov failed a dope test in re-tests of samples collected during the London Games,” The Indian Express quotes sources in United World Wrestling (UWW) as saying. UWW is wrestling’s global governing body.

Gold-medallist Taymazov’s samples were collected during the 2008 Beijing Games. Kudukhov and Taymazon would both lose their medals. “With Kudukhov testing positive, Yogeshwar Dutt of India will get the silver,” UWW sources said.

However, the official confirmation will have to come from the world body and IOC.

Once confirmed, Yogeshwar will be the second wrestler after Sushil Kumar to win silver at an Olympics. Sushil Kumar, too, won the honour at the London Games but in the 66kg freestyle.

In London, Yogeshwar lost the pre-quarterfinal to Kudukhov. But when the Russian reached the final, Yogeshwar got another chance in the repechage round and went on to win bronze.

So far, only five wrestlers have tested positive in the re-tests.

Feb 18: There are no half measures for fit-again New Zealand pace spearhead Trent Boult who is ready to challenge India captain Virat Kohli on his return to international cricket during the two-Test series starting in Wellington on Friday. Boult was out of action for the past six weeks due to a fracture on his right hand sustained during the Boxing Day Test against Australia and missed out on the limited-overs leg of the India series. Back for the traditional format, the left-arm fast bowler made his priorities clear ahead of the first Test.

"That's personally why I play the game, to get guys like that (Kohli) out and test myself against them, so I can't wait to get stuck in. But he's an exceptional player. Everyone knows how great he is," Boult said, sending out a warning after landing in the capital city for the opening Test.

New Zealand's last Test series in Australia was a nightmare as they lost 0-3 and India will be a tough test for the Black Caps.

"They are a great side and they are leading the ICC Test Championship. They are very clear on how they wanted to play the game. It was a tough learning curve in Australia. It's good to see where we are in terms of bouncing back," said Boult.

The Basin Reserve track will have a lot for the seamers and in conducive conditions, a wily customer like Boult will prove to be a handful for the travellers.

"I'm preparing for a solid wicket. It generally is very good here and goes the full distance (five days). I do enjoy playing here, the history that's involved, and it's going to be an exciting week building up. I can't wait to get out there," said the 30-year-old who has taken 256 wickets from 65 Tests.

It was frustrating for him to watch his side get walloped 0-5 in the T20 series but exhilarating when it got its mojo back in the subsequent one-dayers.

The Black Caps won 3-0 in the 50-over format. "I think it is what it is. I have just got to put the last six or so weeks behind me and just back myself to get out there and do my thing," said Boult, who warmed up by playing a club game at the picturesque Taupo ground.

Boult did find a bit of humour in his injury which, for him, was more of an accident.

"If I had to break a hand, (it would) probably be my right one. Breaking a hand, you don't really know how much you use it unless you break it," said Boult.

"I was pushing in off the long run. I think a couple of the clubbies from Taupo really enjoyed that. It was a good afternoon," added the pacer, who sent down eight overs in a friendly game for his club Cadets.

While bowling isn't a problem, Boult is hoping that catching doesn't become an issue.

"Everything has gone very well but catching will be the biggest issue for me," he said.

Professionally, Boult had to lie low due to injury, but it was also a good break as he and wife Lana welcomed their second child.

"Having some time away from the game and having my second son a couple of weeks ago came at quite a good time," said Boult.

Fighting fit, all he wants now is to get hold of a red kookaburra and get a few to tail into Kohli and company.

"I am hungry to be here and can't wait to get back in the white and get the red ball moving around," he said.

New Delhi, Apr 2: BJP MP and former cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Thursday said that he will donate his two year's salary to PM-CARES Fund to support the battle against coronavirus pandemic in the country.

"People ask what can their country do for them. The real question is what can you do for your country? I am donating my 2 year's salary to #PMCaresFund. You should come forward too! @narendramodi @JPNadda @BJP4Delhi #IndiaFightsCorona," Gambhir tweeted.

The total number of coronavirus cases in India climbed to 1965 on Thursday after 131 people confirmed positive in the past 12 hours, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

At present, there are 1764 COVID-19 active cases in the country and 50 people have died due to the lethal infection.

Interestingly, on this day in 2011, India lifted its second World Cup title after a drought of 28 years. Gambhir played a crucial role in the final and anchored the run-chase.

India won its first World Cup in 1983 under the leadership of former all-rounder Kapil Dev.
