Yashwant is 'right candidate' to be Jharkhand CM, says Advani

June 17, 2014

Hazaribagh, Jun 17: BJP veteran L K Advani today met party colleague Yashwant Sinha in jail here and asked him to secure bail and lead the party in the Jharkhand Assembly elections later this year, describing him as the "right person" for the chief minister's post.

advanilk86-year-old Advani drove to the Hazaribagh Central Jail to meet Sinha, who was arrested two weeks back for ordering BJP workers to tie up an Electricity Board official in Hazaribagh.

Both Advani as also Sinha, who has held important portfolios as Finance and External Affairs Minister in the previous NDA regime, are seen as part of the "sidelined" old guard that also includes veterans like Murli Manohar Joshi and erstwhile senior leader Jaswant Singh.

Sinha did not run for election this time. His son, Jayant, contested and won this parliamentary seat.

Emerging after his meeting with Sinha, Advani said the Jharkhand leader "is the right person to be chief minister after the Assembly elections later this year".

"What I feel is that when he is getting support and respect from all BJP stalwarts, time has come Sinha should respect the feeling of BJP leaders, not only from Jharkhand, but also in the country and come out of jail," Advani told reporters after his two-hour visit to the prison.|

Advani said Sinha should thereafter lead the ongoing agitation against power crisis and 'corruption' in the GM’s office in the Hazaribagh area of the electricity board.

"Yashwant Sinha has launched a historic agitation in support of small villages ... I appreciate the stand taken by him for fulfilling the cause of poor villagers and he deserves all praise and support.
"Prior to this agitation, probably no other BJP leader in the state has ever launched such a vital movement in Jharkhand," Advani said.

"It is very significant for Jharkhand where no concrete development work had ever taken place earlier. Had this type of 'andolan' (agitation) been taken up by the BJP, then the picture of this state would have been different," he claimed.

Asked whether Sinha had launched the agitation to remain active in state politics, Advani replied, "Why not?

"He is capable of leading Jharkhand after the Assembly elections and the right person to become the next chief minister of state, which requires good governance and able leadership particularly after the historic 2014 poll verdict in the country."

Advani was accompanied by former chief minister Arjun Munda and state president Ravindra Rai.

Sinha is in jail in connection with alleged assault of a senior government official on June two. He has been in judicial remand from June 3 after he and several other BJP activists were arrested in connection with an alleged assault of a senior government official during a party demonstration near the Jharkhand State Electricity Board's Hazaribagh branch.

Advani also visited the 'State Cell' and offered tributes to Jai Prakash Narayan and other freedom fighterss.

Tehran, Mar 3: Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on Monday urged Indian authorities to ensure the well-being of all Indians and not let "senseless" violence prevail.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on Thursday that law enforcement agencies were working on the ground to prevent violence and ensure restoration of confidence and normalcy.

Mr Kumar has urged international bodies not to make irresponsible statements at this sensitive time. "Iran condemns the wave of organised violence against Indian Muslims. For centuries, Iran has been a friend of India. We urge Indian authorities to ensure the wellbeing of ALL Indians & not let senseless thuggery prevail. Path forward lies in peaceful dialogue and rule of law," Zarif tweeted.

The communal violence over the amended citizenship law in Delhi has claimed at least 42 lives. Frenzied mobs have torched houses, shops, vehicles, a petrol pump and pelted stones at police personnel.

New Delhi, Apr 24: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has termed the government decision to freeze Dearness Allowance of Central government employees for a year as "insensitive and inhuman."

The former Congress President in a tweet said: "Lakhs and crores are being spent on the Bullet Train and New Delhi's Central Vista which should have been suspended, but the government has deducted DA of Central government employees and pensioners... It is insensitive and inhuman."

"The tragic part is that by deducting this amount from January 1, 2020 up to 30th June, 2021 for a period of 1.5 years, the government of India proceeds to deduct almost Rs 38 thousand crore from the income of these middle class government employees and pensioners, who rely completely on the pay and pensions that they receive," said Randeep Surjewala, chief spokesperson of Congress.

There are about 50 lakh such serving government employees and about 62 lakh pensioners.

"Even more tragic and objectionable is the fact that the government of India has not even spared our armed forces. The government has deducted Rs 11 thousand crore of the 15 lakh serving armed forces personnel and nearly 26 lakh military pensioners. What is their fault? They are serving the nation in times of all types of crises," said Surjewala.

The Congress alleged that the government did not spare the savings scheme.

Instead of curbing the wasteful expenditure, the government has been constantly hitting at the income of government employees and the middle class, it added.

New Delhi, May 31: Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Sunday questioned the Prime Minister on how much money has been given to labourers from the PM-CARES Fund.

"I would like to ask Prime Minister Modi, 'Can you tell us how much money did you give to labourers from your PM-CARES Fund?' I request him to answer this question. Many people died during this period, some died while walking, some died in the train, some died of hunger," Sibal said while addressing a virtual press conference.

The senior Congress leader further asked how much ex gratia did the Prime Minister give to the labourers who died in the corona crisis while negotiating the lockdown.

"I refer you to Section 12 of the Disaster Management Act. It says that ex gratia assistance on account of the loss of life and also assistance for the restoration of livelihood should be provided by the government. Did the government give ex gratia assistance to people who died in the crisis? The act also mentions special provisions for widows and orphans. The government should clarify how much assistance they gave to such people," he said.

Sibal said that the government should keep aside its agenda for the last six years and concentrate on making pro-poor policies.

"In the coming days, our economy is going to go into the negative territory as also confirmed by RBI. There are 45 crore labourers in our country. What will be their state? We have to look at our future. That is why we want to request the government that the agenda that they have run over the last six years should be kept aside and that government should care about the poor and draft policies for them," the Congress leader said.
