Newsroom, Feb 28: Karnataka BJP president and former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has grabbed media attention in Pakistan too after he reportedly claimed that air strike carried out by Indian Air Force (IAF) in neighbouring country will help the saffron party in upcoming general elections.

Several Pakistani TV channels today gave coverage to Yeddyurappa’s comment that India's air strikes had resulted in a wave in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and would help the BJP win over 22 of 28 Lok Sabha seats from Karnataka in the parliamentary elections scheduled to take place by May.

In a post on Twitter on Thursday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), headed by Imran Khan, also referred to Yeddyurappa’s comment. “Air Force excursions, war mongering, soldiers in captivity and the lives of so many people in danger all equate to 22 seats in the eyes of representatives on India’s ruling party. Is war an election option?” the PTI posted on Twitter.

Earlier, when an eminent Indian journalist posted a comment on the remark of Karnataka BJP chief, Imran Khan’s party took note of it and tweeted: “We hope you understand that you were manipulated into warmongering. #LetBetterSensePrevail; isolate the ppl (people) who r (are) desperate to win an election. War is in no nation’s interest, & (and) its soldiers & (and) civilians who are the collateral damage. Don’t let one man use it for political mileage”.

Meanwhile, Yeddyurappa accused the Indian media of reporting his statement out of context. “My statement is being reported out of context. I said that ‘situation favourable for BJP’ which I am saying for last couple of months (sic). This is not first time that I said BJP in Karnataka will win minimum 22 seats under the able leadership of Modi ji,” he tweeted.

However, yesterday speaking to media persons in Chitradurga Yeddyurappa had clearly stated that the air strike would help BJP in winning more than 22 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka.

Bengaluru, Mar 10: With concerns growing by the day, the Karnataka government is readying three more labs to test throat swab samples.

Currently, only two labs in Bengaluru — National Institute of Virology and Virus Research and Diagnostics Laboratory (VRDL) lab attached to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute — are categorised biosafety level 2+, a requirement for coronavirus tests.

Now, the government is working on upgrading three more labs, one each in the government medical colleges at Hassan, Mysuru and Shivamogga. “The labs will be ready within one week,” the authorities said.

Currently, the labs are testing only throat swab samples of suspected patients and taking 24 hours to give the results. “A patient’s blood sample will be collected only if he or she tests positive for covid-19 infection in the first throat swab sample.

While earlier the state would send all samples of suspected coronavirus cases to NIV, Pune, the two labs were upgraded to biosafety level 2+ in mid-February.

Mar 11: Two activists of Sangh Parivar have been arrested by the police in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore for hurling a petrol bomb at a mosque in Ganapathy on March 5.

The miscreants had hurled petrol bombs at the front gate of Hidayathul Sunnath Jamath Mosque at Vedhambal Nagar near Ganapathy in Coimbatore around 1 am on March 5. Since the bomb did not explode, nobody was injured in the incident.

Following a complaint from the Secretary of the Jama’ath, the police had formed three separate teams to nab the miscreants.

Based on tip-offs, the police detained BJP member Pandi (41) and VHP member Akhil (23), both from Rathnapuri in Coimbatore for inquiry.  The duo has also been remanded to judicial custody.

According to a statement by the Coimbatore police, the accused told the police that they hurled petrol bomb at the mosque to protest against the attack against Anand, a Hindu Munnani functionary a few days ago. The accused also reportedly told the police that they were planning to create more chaos.

Madukkarai Anand, the District Secretary of Hindu Munnani was attacked on March 4, while he was returning home after participating in a pro-CAA dharna organised by the BJP and allied parties in Gandhipuram.

He was allegedly followed by men on two motorbikes, who attacked him with rods. Anand suffered head injuries in the attack and was admitted to a hospital. The Podanur police registered a case for attempt to murder based on a complaint and had also formed special teams to nab the accused. However, no one has been apprehended in that case till now.

Based on the statements given by the accused, the police arrested the two men, seized the two-wheeler they used, two cell phones and the things they used to manufacture the petrol bomb.
