Yeddyurappa promises 7.5% quota for Valmikis if it comes to power

Lingsugur (Raichur dist), Oct 24: State BJP president B?S?Yeddyurappa on Sunday promised that members of the Valmiki community would be given 7.5% reservation if the BJP came to power after the next Assembly elections.

He said that the quota would be provided within the framework of the Constitution.

The former chief minister was speaking after inaugurating the Maharshi Valmiki convention organised by the state ST?morcha of the BJP.

Yeddyurappa announced that a separate commission would be formed to study

the conditions of the scheduled tribes (STs) in the state, if the party was elected to power.

He criticised the Congress government in the state for not taking pro-people measures. Probity and development had taken a backseat in the present dispensation, the former chief minister said.

Muralidhar Rao, the incharge of the party affairs in the state, said that the BJP should be brought to power in the next Assembly elections, if the development works undertaken by the central government had to reach every village in the state. K?S?Eshwarappa, leader of the Opposition in the Council, said that the Congress government had cheated the dalits, backward classes and the minorities, after coming to power in their name.

Jagadish Shettar, leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, said that the Siddaramaiah government was on its way out. Former deputy chief minister R?Ashoka charged Siddaramaiah with allowing his ministers to loot the exchequer. MLA?C?T?Ravi opposed the government's move to celebrate Tipu Jayanti. A huge procession was taken out on the streets of the town prior to the convention.

Bengaluru, Jan 11: The Chief Justice of India Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde on Saturday inaugurated the phase-1 of the new building of the Karnataka Judicial Academy on Crescent Road in Bengaluru.

The new building has three floors, besides, the ground floor and two basement floors.

While Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa inaugurated the 319-seater multi-purpose auditorium, at which Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka felicitated Justice Bobde.

Justice Ravi Malimath, President of the Karnataka Judicial Academy and Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, in his welcome address said that the academy has so far trained as many as 4000 judicial officers and striving for excellence in the field of judiciary.

The building, built in the first phase, has parking in the lower and the upper basement, which can accommodate 44 cars and 124 two-wheelers, the ground floor consists of a 319-seater multi-purpose air-conditioned auditorium, a lecture hall with 84 seats, two lecture halls with 40 seats each and a VIP lounge. The First Floor has a lecture hall with 84 seats, two lecture halls with 40 seats each, a VIP lounge, two discussion rooms and an administrative office for the staff of the academy.

The second phase, to be built has a parking facility for 36 four-wheelers and 22 two-wheelers in the lower basement and 32 four-wheelers and 30 two-wheelers in the upper basement.

The total cost of the project, including Phase-1 and Phase-2, to be executed by the Public Works Department in the sprawling 2.2 acres plot of the Karnataka Judicial Academy is around Rs 96.02 Crore.

Mangalore, Jan 15: In one of the biggest seizure of gold in the new decade, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths here have seized five kg of gold valued at Rs two Crore from the Air Cargo Complex at International Airport here recently.

Acting on a tip-off the officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Bangalore and Mangalore in a co-ordinated effort unraveled a unique modus of smuggling of gold through Air Cargo Complex, at old airport, Bajpe Mangalore two days back, According to release issued here on Tuesday evening.

The smuggled gold was concealed in five metal sprockets which were imported by M/s Swaroop Mineral Pvt Ltd of Udupi in the name of “mining conveyor drive chain”.

Shivamogga, Jan 11: Members of Karnataka Congress women's wing staged a protest in Shivamogga on Friday against the rise in onion prices and domestic LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders.

As a mark of protest, the demonstrators wore garlands made of onions, drew rangoli on the road and cooked food with firewood. The protestors also carried posters comparing the price of cylinders in Congress and BJP-led government in the Centre.

The price of non-subsidised LPG was hiked by Rs 19 per cylinder from January 1, 2020.
