Lucknow, Oct 3: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to skip Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world, from its official tourism booklet has triggered a controversy. Incidentally, Taj Mahal is the biggest revenue earner for the tourism department in UP.

The booklet issued by the UP Tourism department on the occasion of the World Tourism Day this year has omitted Taj Mahal, the monument of love, which is also a 'World Heritage Site' from the list of attractions in the state.

The booklet makes mention of almost all the major religious events and places in the state including the famous Ganga Arti, Mathura, Vrindavan and Ayodhya.

The Goraksha Peeth of which UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath is the 'mahant' (chief) has also found mention in the booklet as an important religious spot.

A few 'shakti peeths ' (temples of goddess Durga) have also been mentioned in the booklet along with a description of Ramayana and Buddha circuits.

A tourism department officials have so far not explained the omission of Taj Mahal from the booklet.

That there was no love lost between the Taj Mahal and the UP government was evident earlier when the state government did not include the Monument of Love in its plan for the development of the cultural heritage of UP in the budget for the ongoing financial year.

The cultural heritage of the state included Ayodhya, Varanasi, Mathura, Naimisharanya, Chitrakoot and Vindhyachal and the budget has made a provision of Rs 2800 crore for developing infrastructural facilities at all these places.

Opposition leaders said that the UP governmentseems to seek revenge on monuments that belonged to a particular religion.

Adityanath had on several occasions in the past said that Taj Mahal did not represent the country's cultural heritage. ''Taj Mahal may be a beautiful building...but it cannot be a symbol of our cultural heritage,'' Adityanath had said earlier.

Avadh historians and social activists, however, said that Taj Mahal certainly represented India's rich heritage and it deserved to be treated as such.

Instead of connecting the Taj Mahal with any religion, it should be considered as an archaeological heritage of flourishing ancient art.

Mangaluru, June 24: Congress leader Ivan D’Souza has vowed to serve the poor and practice as a lawyer in the city, as he completed six years of tenure as a member of Karnataka legislative council on June 23.

Expressing satisfaction about his work as an MLC, he said: “I’m one among the three MLCs who have 100% attendance in the council. Meanwhile, I’m the only council member to utilise the privilege of raising five questions in each session. I brought several major issues to the government through the questions and succeeded in finding solutions to the problems of people.”

“During my six years of tenure as a council member, I could bring sanctions to the tune of Rs 46 crore through various departments. Meanwhile, financial aid to the tune of Rs 13.24 crore has been distributed through Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to nearly 1,600 beneficiaries. I will continue to serve the poor on my own as an individual. For this, I have set up an office in the premises of my house,” Ivan said, adding that he has distributed grocery kits and other essential items to over 18,000 families during the lockdown period.

“I have successfully fulfilled my duties as the chief whip of the government in the council and also as the parliamentary secretary to revenue department in Siddaramaiah and H D Kumaraswamy governments, respectively,” he said.

Ivan said his office in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) building will be handed over to JD(S) MLC S L Boje Gowda. “My doors are always open for the people. I will strive to build the party in the state,” he added.

Bengaluru, Jul 26: The government of Karnataka has urged the Muslims to celebrate Eid al-Adha in a simple manner and follow all guidelines amid mounting cases of covid-19.

The festival, also known as Bakrid, will be celebrated on July 31 in coastal districts of Karnataka and on August 1 in other parts of Karnataka.

In an order, A B Ibrahim, secretary of the department of minority welfare, Hajj and Waqf has prohibited offering Eid prayers in open grounds (Eidgahs) in the wake of pandemic.

Eid prayers can be offered in mosques by following all the necessary precautionary measures including maintaining physical distance. The congregation should not exceed 50 worshippers. If they number exceeds, they should be divided into three groups.

However, except for mosques, no other places should be used for offering congregational prayer.

Besides, all those who attend Eid prayers at mosque should compulsorily wear face masks. Entry is banned for people who are above the age of 60 years and below the age of 10. At least six feet distance needs to be maintained while offering prayer.

Thermal scanning needs to be done before entering the mosque. Hands need to be washed in soap or sanitizer. No one should touch the holy books in the mosque. Hand shaking and embracing to greet will also not be allowed. If any strangers are seen, their movement should be monitored.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Playing down the simmering discontent among the disgruntled legislators who missed a cabinet berth again, Karnataka BJP on Tuesday denied any revolt brewing against Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa.

"An unsigned letter in Kannada circulating in the social media is bogus, as it was fabricated in the name of Santosh, a private secretary to Yediyurappa. No revolt is brewing against the Chief Minister," party spokesman G. Madhusudhana told news agency here.

In the second cabinet expansion on February 6, only 10 newly-elected legislators, who defected from the Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) in July, were inducted, leaving the party's many aspiring lawmakers miffed.

"The talk of about 20 loyal MLAs ganging up against Yediyurappa is a speculation as rumour mills are working overtime. No rebellion is brewing against the Chief Minister," asserted the official.

On the charge that Yediyurappa's younger son B.Y. Vijayandra was acting like a 'super or de facto CM' and medalling in the state administration, Madhusudhana said the latter was only assisting his father in party activities as he was also a party worker.

"As Yediyurappa is 76 years old and ageing, Vijayandra is helping his father in party affairs so that he (Chief Minister) could be free to attend to administration," Madhusudhana said.

Yediyurappa's elder son B.Y. Raghavendra is a three-time BJP Lok Sabha member from Shimoga in the state's Malnad area.

With six cabinet posts vacant in the 34-member ministry, many legislators, including eight-time MLA Umesh Katti, are upset that they have not been rewarded for their loyalty to the party even six months after the BJP returned to power again in the southern state.

On the purported meeting of about 20 BJP MLAs at the residence of state Industries Minister Jagadish Shettar here on Monday, Madhusudhana said it was a "get-together" as they were all in Bengaluru again to attend the budget session of the state legislature which began on Monday.

"There is no crisis in the party. Our government is stable and will complete the remaining three-year term in office till May 2023," he added.
