Bengaluru, Mar 27: The dream of a young Bengaluru-based businessman and his family to own a luxury car culminated in a tragedy. Sagar J Rao, 31, was killed while four others, including his wife and six-year-old son suffered severe injuries as a Range Rover SUV he was test-driving met with an accident in south Bengaluru, on Tuesday.

The incident took place at the Nayandhalli toll gate on Nice Road, near PES College Toll Plaza, Hosakerehalli. Byatarayanapura traffic police suspect Rao, a resident of Padmanabhanagar and a native of Mysuru, was at the wheel of the SUV that was moving at a high speed at the time of the accident.

Rao sustained grievous injuries and died en route to hospital, while his wife Sandhya Sagar, 27, son Samartha S, 6, Sagar's friend Gautham S, 30, and demo car driver Shivakumar sustained injuries.

Police said Rao, who was into interior designing, planned to buy a Range Rover and evinced interested in test-driving the car. A showroom at Roopena Agrahara arranged for a test-drive and sent the demo car to Rao. Shivakumar, was in the passenger seat in the front as Rao drove the car on NICE Road towards Hosakerehalli Ring Road when the accident occurred around 3 pm.

The driver was driving at a high speed and lost his control while approaching a toll plaza near PES College. He veered the car to the extreme left and initially hit a cement block and later the road railings. The car jumped the railings and flipped over several times before landing in a 10-metre-deep ditch,” a police officer said.

Dr Soumyalatha SK, deputy commissioner of police (traffic west), said the injured were rushed to BGS Global Hospital, near Kengeri, where Rao was declared brought dead. “We’ve registered a case and seized the car, which was completely damaged in the accident,” Soumyalatha said.

Mangaluru, May 19: In a bizarre incident which exposes the publicity craze of “philanthropists”, members of a city-based organisation returned without disturbing grocery kits after villagers refused to be photographed while receiving them.

The incident took place at Mukrampady village in Puttur a few days ago. According to sources, a team belonging to an organisation from Mangaluru had visited the village with a letter from their organisation, to distribute grocery kits to families near mosques in the month of Ramadan.

The team members reportedly insisted the beneficiaries to pose for pictures with the team near a mosque while being given the food kit. The villagers refused to fulfil their wish.

The organisation members then left the place without handing over the Ramadan kits, sources said.

Bengaluru, May 16: Health Minister B Sriramulu has sought the aid of Home department for curbing sex work in certain parts of the state - which continues unabated despite lockdown.

“It poses health risks to those involved. I request the department to ensure that the business is prohibited at such a time of crisis,” he stated in a letter to Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

At the same time, in order to ensure the safety of these workers, Sriramulu has asked both the Health department and the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS) to come up with a detailed report on rehabilitation of sex workers and transgenders.

The Health minister’s order was prompted by a letter by writer and activist Roopa Hassan. The writer, who was earlier member of a panel (led by actor-turned-politician Jayamala) on the study of issues faced by sex workers, had sought government’s intervention to stop condom distribution to registered sex workers and transgenders, as continuing work during pandemic was posing health risks to the community.

New Delhi, Mar 20: An official of South Western Railway has been suspended for "hiding" her son, who returned from Germany and later tested positive for coronavirus.

The youth has been hiding at a railway guest house in Bengaluru, officials said on Friday.

"She (the railway official) not only failed to inform authorities about her son's return from Germany, but also endangered the lives of others by lodging him in a railway rest house near the main Bangalore railway station," railway spokesperson E Vijaya said.

The Assistant Personnel Officer (Traffic) has been suspended, Vijaya said.

The 25-year-old man, who came from Germany via Spain and was instructed to be in home quarantine after he landed at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on March 13, later tested positive for Covid-19 on March 18.

"She virtually hid her son to protect her family but endangered all of us," a South Western Railway official said.
