Young cop shoots himself dead with rifle

Bagalkot, Dec 1: A police constable, who was on duty attached to Superintendent of Police’s residence, had committed suicide by shooting himself from his riffle today.

The deceased Manjunath Harijan, 28, was the native of Mittalkot village in Kushtagi taluk of Koppal district and was posted to Gagalkot district SP’s office recently. 

After working in Davangere DAR police since 2012, an employee of Karnataka Armed Reserve Police, Harijan had been transferred to Bagalkot, where he was working as a security guard at the residence of SP for the past one year.

As usual, he reported for duty on Saturday and was working on 2 am to 6 am night-shift, guarding the residence of SP. According to sources, soon after his shift of duty ended Saturday morning, he shot himself dead with his official 303-rifle. A shocked police department is yet to find out reasons behind his death. His family has been informed about the incident.

According to the police, the constable had never disclosed anything to his colleagues about whether he was being harassed or tortured by the department or if he had any personal problems that forced him to take the extreme step. 

His body has been sent for autopsy and an investigation into the death will be taken up, sources added.

Davanagere, May 3: Karnataka's Davanagere district on Sunday reported 21 COVID-19 positive cases, said Mahantesh Beelagi, Deputy Commissioner.

The number of COVID-19 patients has suddenly taken a giant leap in the district.

"We had sent 94 samples on May 1, on May 2 we sent 72 samples. Today we sent 164 samples for testing. In the last two days, 21 samples have tested positive for coronavirus, we are tracing to know how did all of them came in contact with COVID-19 infected person," said Mahantesh Beelagi.

"Our surveillance team and police team have started tracing the primary and secondary contacts of all 21 people," he added.
Davanagere is currently in the Green Zone.

Meanwhile, 13 new COVID-19 positive cases were reported in Karnataka till 5 pm on Sunday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 614, according to the State Health Department.

Hubli, Feb 25: A Hubli court in Karnataka has sent to police custody till February 28 three students from Jammu and Kashmir, who were booked under sedition charges for raising pro-Pakistan slogan in a video shared on social media.

A second Joint Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court on Monday sent the three students, identified as Basit Ashik Sophi (19), Talib Majid (19) and Amir Mohiuddin (23), to police custody till February 28 for questioning in the matter.

The court directed the police to make the accused undergo a medical evaluation before the interrogation and produce the medical certificates in the court before the next hearing.

The three students were last week transferred to Belgaum Hindalga jail from Hubli sub-jail and the case, registered in Gokul Road police station, was also transferred to the rural police station because the video was recorded in the college hostel room which is in the latter's jurisdiction.

The Kashmiri students were under judicial custody since February 17 following their arrest for raising pro-Pakistan slogans and posting a video of the same on social media on the night of February 16.

Mangaluru, Mar 27: In a shocking development, an infant with no travel history tests positive for the deadly novel coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada, taking the total coronavirus positive cases to six. 

The 10-month-old child, hailing from Sajipanadu Village in Bantwal Taluk was admitted to a hospital at Deralakatte in Mangaluru for treatment on March 23 as it had developed respiratory problems. 

On March 24, the child’s condition worsened and hence his throat swabs was sent for COVID-19 testing. Today, reports of the tests confirmed that the child was infected with COVID-19.
