At a time when murders are being used as a tool for dividing society and gaining political mileage by communal parties, the death of a young cricketer during a match on the outskirts of Mangaluru and the events that followed in fact transcended all boundaries drawn by man.

The tragedy unfolded on December 17 during a cricket tournament at Miyapadavu village near Manjeshwar, a town located on the border of Dakshina Kannada and Kasaragod districts. The area has been in the news for wrong reasons as a highly polarised society communally, especially in the recent past.

Padmanabhan, 26, son of Narayanan, a resident of Jodkallu collapsed on the ground while he was about to bowl the last ball of the over. Even though the organisers rushed him to a nearby hospital, Padmanabhan, who was working as a mobile phone technician at Pachamblam, near Kumbla, died of cardiac arrest. The youth was a chronic heart patient.

Even as Mr. Narayanan and his wife, Chandravathy, were reeling under the cruel shock fate had dealt them, harsh realities of life were weighing down their loss.

As the youth’s body was brought to the family’s thatched house on four cents of land, scores of relatives and friends trooped into pay homage to Padmanabhan. As the time for the funeral drew close, the family’s despair also grew.

They did not have their own water source to perform the final rites. Moreover, there was no crematorium nearby.

It was then that Mr. Narayanan’s neighbour and long-time associate Abdul Khader stepped in and facilitated the cremation in his plot.

Incidentally, Padmanabhan found a final resting place beside the grave of his grandmother, who too was laid to rest in Mr. Khader’s plot a few years ago.

Mr. Khader, who is a salesman at a shop in Uppala, said: “It is our duty to help those in need, especially our friends. Nothing else matters. My friendship with Mr. Narayanan goes a long way. It is quite sad that well-mannered Padmanabhan, who himself used to go out of the way to help others, met with such a tragic end.”

Mr. Narayanan had built a makeshift house on the surplus land handed over to him by the State a few years ago. However, the plot does not have road access and the family has to fetch water from another locality daily, says Ms. Chandravathy.

Padmanabhan had developed heart-related problems when he was a Class VIII student.

The family, which was already struggling to make both ends meet, had to shell out nearly Rs. 2,000 every month to meet Padmanabhan’s medical bill. The family earns a meagre income. Mr. Narayanan works as a casual labourer and Ms. Chandravathy is a part-time beedi worker.

New Delhi, Apr 29: WhatsApp on Tuesday said it will now allow up to eight people to connect on a group video call as an increasing number of people turn to digital platforms to connect with friends and family amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Facebook-owned company said over the last month, people on average are spending over 15 billion minutes talking each day on WhatsApp calls, well above a typical day before the pandemic.

"...we see that people all over the world are turning to voice and video calling on WhatsApp more than ever before. Group calling has been particularly useful and our users have asked to connect with more people at once," WhatsApp said in a blogpost.

Starting Tuesday, the company is doubling the number of participants one can have on a WhatsApp video or voice call from 4 to 8 people at a time, it added.

WhatsApp emphasised that like written messages, all calls on its platform are protected with end-to-end encryption.

"We have built group calling in a way that makes it available for as many users as possible, including people on lower-end devices and slow network conditions," it added.

WhatsApp said that to access the new, higher participant limit on WhatsApp calls, all participants in a call need to update to the latest version of WhatsApp available on iPhone or Android.

Video calling tools like Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and others have also seen a significant jump in userbase and traffic as people connect while maintaining social distancing amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Last week, Facebook had introduced Messenger Rooms that will soon hold up to 50 people with no time limit.

It had added that the company will also add ways to create rooms from Instagram Direct, WhatsApp and Portal.

Noting that between WhatsApp and Messenger, more than 700 million accounts participate in calls every day, Facebook had said, adding that video calling on Messenger and WhatsApp more than doubled in many countries.

Also, views of Facebook Live and Instagram Live videos have also increased significantly in March, it said.

Bengaluru, Jan 10: Barely 24 hours after the standoff between BJP workers and students of Jyoti Nivas College (JNC) in Bengaluru over CAA became breaking news, it took political hues with the saffron party and the Congress locking horns over the issue.

Taking the battle to the anti-CAA camp on Thursday, the BJP aggressively defended its party workers, who on Wednesday erected a pro-CAA banner on the college compound wall and allegedly forced students to sign on it as a mark of support.

With one of the workers who had locked horns with JNC students by his side, deputy chief minister CN Ashwath Narayan, at his official residence, questioned students’ right to protest party cadre erecting a pro-CAA banner on their college compound wall.

“How can you tell people not to create awareness about a law that has been passed in this country? Who gave students the right to question political workers? If there was anything wrong, let them report to the police,” retorted the minister, who also holds the higher education department portfolio.

On the other hand, the Congress, cashing in on simmering anger over the assault on JNU students in Delhi, used the JNC standoff to project the ruling party as prime culprits in stifling the voice of students. BTM Layout MLA and seasoned politician R Ramalinga Reddy even warned the BJP against “allowing JNC to become another JNU”.

Reddy met with the JNC administration and extended his support against any “threats” to students. It is being alleged that Reddy was the first to “leak” the video of Wednesday’s row to the media. The college falls in his assembly constituency.

Taking a cue from his colleague’s stand, former CM and opposition leader Siddaramaiah also leaned into the matter and sent a strong message “backing” students in the standoff. “BJP goons are threatening students of Jyotinivas College to support CAA. MrYediyurappa, I am strictly warning you to control hooligans from your party. Don't subvert knowledge & institutions for your selfish motives. We won't let Ktaka to be victim of your Hitler rule!” said Siddaramaiah in a tweet.
