Bengaluru, Nov 27: A young software engineer has been arrested for allegedly raping his friend’s wife after she celebrated her husband’s birthday in an apartment in Kasavanahalli area, near Bellandur the capital of Karnataka.

The accused has been identified as Nilab Nayan, 26, a resident of HSR Layout, who works as a solutions management consultant with an IT major in Electronics City. The victim is a 24-year-old woman, whose husband is also a techie and friend of the accused.

The incident occurred in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday when the victim and her husband went to a sports and entertainment centre in Kasavanahalli to celebrate the latter’s birthday.

Her husband’s four friends, including Nayan, joined them and they began partying. Subsequently, all of them went to another friend’s house to continue the birthday bash.

“I was too tired as we had played various games at the sports arena before we went to our friend’s house. I went to the bedroom to rest for some time, while my husband and his friends were busy chatting in the balcony. The room was dimly lit. After some time I realised a man was undressing me and trying to assault me. On realising it wasn’t my husband, I tried to raise an alarm. But Nayan covered my mouth with his hand and continued to assault me,” the woman told police.

The woman pinched Nayan hard, freed herself from his clutches and screamed for help, police added. Responding to her cries, her husband and other friends rushed to the bedroom and started banging on the door as it was locked from inside. As Nayan ran into the bathroom, the woman opened the door. While everyone was trying to figure out what happened, Nayan fled the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed Nayan, who is from Bihar, was also chatting with his friends before he went to answer nature’s call. He was on his way to the bathroom attached to the bedroom, when he saw the woman lying on the bed, police said.

“We arrested the accused on Monday night and produced him before court on Tuesday after completion of certain procedures, including medical tests. He has been remanded in judicial custody,” a police officer said.

The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. “We have registered a case of rape against Nayan based on the complaint filed by the woman. Further probe is under way,” a police officer said.

Bengaluru, Feb 13: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday said the government had initiated measures to implement the Sarojini Mahishi report as the 12-hour Karnataka bandh call by several pro-Kannada organisations under the banner of Karnataka Sanghatanegala Okkoota began on Thursday.

“Government always stood for Kannada and Kannadigas and initiated measures to implement the Sarojini Mahishi report,” Yediyurappa said. Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, Ola, Uber and auto services were affected even though buses were plying as usual. Security has also been beefed up in Bengaluru after stones were pelted at a Tirupati-Mangaluru bus in Farangipet, though no one was injured.

Bangalore University has postponed all postgraduate (PG) exams scheduled for today. A pro-Kannada activist, Praveen Shetty, was kept under house arrest and police have detained a few people, including those involved in Cauvery protests and other bandh cases.

The organisations are demanding the implementation of a report by former union minister Sarojini Mahishi that recommends a certain percentage of jobs to Kannadigas in public sector undertakings, private companies, and multinational companies. The report was submitted in 1984 but is yet to be implemented.

Social media giant Twitter briefly blocked the Karnataka BJP's account after it posted several provocative tweets and taunted Muslim women.

Ironically, the BJP called its unhygienic tweets as "liberal views". "It is unfortunate that our handle was locked out by Twitter for speaking the truth about liberals," it said.

"A big thanks for your support and encouragement. Satymeva Jayate. Jai Hind," the political party said to its supporters.

However, it did not specify for how long Twitter blocked its account but tweeted again on Wednesday after Monday.

Last week Karnataka BJP drew flak on Twitter for taking a swipe at Muslim women who appear to be standing in a line to vote in Delhi's assembly polls. ""Kaagaz Nahi Dikayenge Hum" ! ! ! Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR exercise (sic)," the party's Karnataka Twitter handle posted using the hashtag #DelhiPolls2020.

It tweeted on Monday, accusing Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Vijay Bahuguna for "cheating" Dalits.

Karnataka BJP spokesperson G. Madhusudhan said that he had no idea about the account being blocked and then unblocked by Twitter.

"What has happened? I don't know," said Madhusudhana.

Reacting to the drubbing BJP suffered in the Delhi Assembly polls, the party tweeted that there is no need to lose heart.

"Now is the time to go back to voters to win their hearts and minds. Let us plan for 2025 from today. We are with you," tweeted Karnataka BJP on Wednesday.

Though BJP congratulated Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for winning the Delhi polls, the party highlighted that it managed to increase it vote share by six per cent compared to 2015.
