Young techie dies after his motorbike collides with excavator

Bengaluru: A young mechanical engineer died after his bike collided with an excavator at the exit point of Sompura toll plaza near Talaghattapura on NICE Road on Saturday.

The victim is Rakshith Gowda, 23, a resident of Nagasandra near Peenya, north Bengaluru. Police said the accident took place at 9.30am when Rakshith was heading to Talaghattapura to meet friends.

He lost control of the bike and hit the excavator which was coming from the wrong direction. 

Rakshith sustained severe injuries and was rushed to nearby Sairam hospital, where he died at 1.10pm. Rakshith had a diploma in mechanical engineering and was working with a private firm.

Udupi, Mar 1: Acting on credible information, Udupi district police arrested five persons and seized 1.35 kg of crude gold worth Rs 56.99 lakh from the possession of the accused, custom department said on Sunday.

A case has been registered against four people at Kundapur and one at Byndoor on charges of gold smuggling. The accused were transporting gold from Calicut to Bhatkal, informed Joannes George, joint Commissioner of Customs.

Off these five accused, four persons were held at Kundapur, while other at Byndoor on Saturday evening.

Mangaluru, Jan 13: At least one lakh people from across the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are likely to attend the protest meet against CAA-NRC on January 15 at Adyar Kannur in Mangaluru.

Massive preparations are going on at the Shaha Garden in Adyar where the event is expected to start at 2:30 p.m.

Organisers have urged the people to make the event successful one by maintain peace and not giving an opportunity for trouble mongers to disrupt the event.

Addressing a press meet here today, K S Mohammad Masood, president of the Muslim Central Committee of DK and Udupi, said that senior activists and priests from different religions also will take part in the event.

The guest list includes acclaimed thinker and activist Harsh Mander, former IAS officer Kannan Gopinathan, retired Supreme Court judge Venkate Gopala Gowda.

Mangaluru Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha, Jnanaprakash Swamiji of Mysuru, Mangaluru Khazi Thwaka Ahmed Musliyar, Udupi Khazi Bekal Musliyar, Ullal Khazi Fazal Koyamma Thangal, JIH leader Mohammed Kunhi and PFI leader Mohammad Shaqib also will among dozens of guests.

Bengaluru, Apr 6: Karnataka State Board for Auqaf on Monday suspended mass prayers and visit to the Qabrasthans (graveyards) and dargahs on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat on April 9 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"It is hereby directed to all not to hold congregational prayer in the Masjid and the management of the Qabrasthans/Dargahs throughout the State should suspend the visit of public on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat on Thursday, April 9," according to a statement here on Monday.

It said, no public shall be allowed to perform religious rituals in the Qabrasthans/Dargahs and all the gates shall be kept closed.
