Young woman boxer collapses during practice, dies

Kolkata, Jul 4: A 20-year-old boxer who had represented Bengal in the Nationals died during practice on Wednesday afternoon. Rushed to hospital in an unconscious state, Jyoti Pradhan suffered a cardiac arrest before doctors could begin treatment. Her body has been sent for post-mortem. The West Bengal Amateur Boxing Federation (WBABF) has also sought a detailed report about the incident from Bhowanipore Boxing Association, the club she was practising at.

According to club members present, Pradhan had sparred with a partner in the ring and was later practising with a punching bag when she suddenly slumped around 4.30pm. After the trainers failed to revive her, they rushed her to SSKM Hospital. Doctors said she was breathing when they wheeled her into the emergency ward but suffered a cardiac arrest before they could begin treatment.

State minister Sovondeb Chattopadhyay, a boxer in his college days and president of the club, said the incident was unfortunate and bizarre as he had not heard of any deaths while boxing with a punching bag. "You can get injured while sparring with a partner. But with a bag, this has never happened," he said.

The boxing fraternity, too, expressed shock at the demise. "Pradhan was a very promising boxer. She had the potential to shine for India," said WBABF secretary Swapan Banerjee.

Pradhan was a student at Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College in Kolkata and resided at Bhukailash Road in Kidderpore. Well-built and agile in the ring, Pradhan had made a name in boxing cirlces while still in school and had participated in the School Nationals. She had thereafter graduated to the senior level and represented the state in the 60kg category at the Nationals in Rohtak in 2018. She also won medals at the All India Boxing Classic six months ago.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 29: With Saudi Arabia indefinitely suspending visas for visit to Islam's holiest site for the Umrah pilgrimage in the wake of coronavirus outbreak, more than 10,000 people in the state who are awaiting their turn this year for the annual Hajj pilgrimage are a worried lot.

"This year more than 10,000 people in Kerala have been cleared by the Hajj committee," said C Muhammed Faizy, chairman, Kerala State Hajj Committee.

"There is no cause of worry. We hope that during the time of the pilgrimage, the travel restriction by Saudi Arabia will be lifted," he said.

Umrah is a pilgrimage to the holy site that can be undertaken at any time of the year, while the annual Hajj pilgrimage has specific months according to the lunar calendar.

"The move by the Saudi Arabian Government to impose travel restriction was due to the outbreak of coronavirus. It is a preventive step to contain it. In such large gatherings, if one person is affected, it will spread to others. So we fully understand the concerns of the Saudi Government," Muhammed Faizy added.

He said that the Hajj Committee only processes the requests of annual Hajj visit pilgrims and not Umrah.

"This year we expect the Hajj pilgrimage season to be from June to August after Ramzan. But it may vary according to the Ramzan date. We are yet to get any official correspondence from the Saudi Government regarding travel restrictions," he added.

The Saudi Arabian Government suspended visas for tourists from countries affected by the coronavirus, with many having to cancel their Umrah pilgrimage at the last minute.

Ayodhya, Aug 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday recalled the significance of the path of 'maryada' associated with Lord Ram in the backdrop of the situation created by COVID-19 and emphasised the importance of social distancing and wearing face masks.

He said that the current situation demands 'maryada' should be 'do gaz ki doori, mask hai zaroori' and exhorted everyone to follow it.

In his speech after laying the foundation stone of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the Prime Minister said the temple of Lord Ram will inspire and guide humans for ages to come.

He said that the path of `maryada' followed by Lord Ram is all the more necessary today in the situation created by COVID-19.

"The `maryada' (need) today is do gaj ki doori, mask hai jaroori (keep distance of two yards, wear mask). The Almighty may keep all the citizens healthy and happy, this is my prayer. The blessings of Mother Sita and Shri Ram be always there on the citizens," he said.

The Prime Minister termed the occasion as historic and said that India is starting a glorious chapter when people across the country are excited and emotional to have finally achieved what they had been waiting for centuries.

New Delhi, Apr 28: West Indies flamboyant batsman Chris Gayle has lashed out at former teammate Ramnaresh Sarwan calling him 'worse than coronavirus'.

Gayle, the colossal figure in the shortest format of the game blamed Sarwan for his departure from Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise Jamaica Tallawahs.

The left-handed batsman joined St Lucia Zouks as their marquee player for the 2020 CPL season after Tallawahs chose not to retain him.

Gayle has played for Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the past. He has won the CPL title twice with the Tallawahs and played in the final with the Patriots in 2017.

"The owner of the franchise is a very nice man, I have no problem with him. I think he was actually persuaded to get rid of Chris Gayle," Gayle said in three parts on his YouTube channel.

"So someone has to be in his years telling him to get rid of Gayle. Sarwan, you are worse than the coronavirus right now. What transpired with the Tallahwahs, you had a big part to play.

Sarwan, you are a snake. You know, you are not the most loved person in the Caribbean. You are still stabbing people in the back," he added.

Gayle is the leading T20 run-scorer of all time as well as the man with the most centuries in the format. He is also the leading CPL run-scorer of all time, having amassed 2,344 runs in the tournament.
