Youth held on charge of sexually assaulting student after barging into hostel

Mangaluru, Aug 11: The Dakshina Kannada district police have arrested a person on charge of barging into a hostel and sexually assaulting a college student nearly twenty days ago.

According to B.R. Ravikanthe Gowda, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada, on July 20, the accused had entered the B.Sc. Nursing women’s hostel of K.R. Hospital in Mysuru after threatening the security guard with a knife.

The accused sexually assaulted a hostel inmate and fled after other inmates raised an alarm. A case was registered at Devaraja police station of Mysuru in this regard.

On Friday, a team of cops from the Uppinangady police station arrested Mohammed Altaf, 23, son of Abdul Razak, a resident of Ajilamogaru in Bantwal taluk. He was allegedly hiding, disguised as a worker at a plantation in Patrame village of Belthangady taluk. The SP said he would be handed over to the Mysuru police soon.

Bengaluru, May 25: The 36-hour marathon lockdown call given by Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, passed off peacefully with people opting to remain inside their houses and cooperate with the state government to fight against spread of deadly Covid-19.

Though the call was only for 24 hours from 7 am (Sunday) to 7 am (Monday) another 12 hours was added to it as the night curfew was already in force from 7 pm on Saturday and the next day (Sunday) it continued till Monday up to 7 am.

Autorickshaws and bus service were off the road giving a tough time to people arriving from neighbouring places reach home that too during the night. Adding to their woes was heavy rain that lashed the city for more than two hours on Sunday evening flooding the streets.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: An ambulance driver was thrashed by the family members of a 75-year-old COVID-19 patient who passed away on his way to the hospital in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The incident happened after the patient died in the ambulance while waiting in front of the MS Ramaiah Hospital in Bengaluru.

The driver was dragged out of the ambulance and chased around by a relative.

His clothes were ripped off and harangue were hurled at him. The relative was seen shouting and blaming the driver for the patient's death.

Speaking to news agency, the driver said that he was unable to explain the sequence of the protocol which was to be followed while getting the patient to the treatment ward.

Karnataka is one of the worst-affected states by the coronavirus pandemic. According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the state has 67,456 active cases as of Friday.

The state government has been struggling to contain the spread of the disease as it has intermittently imposed and eased lockdown measures, especially in the capital Bengaluru.

Mangaluru, Mar 26: About 2,771 people are home-quarantined in the wake of the novel coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada district here, Deputy Commissioner said on Wednesday.

"Meanwhile, about 20 people have completed the mandated 28 days of quarantine, DC Sindhu B Rupesh said in a statement here.

More than 38,000 people from the district have been screened and seven are admitted and are under observation, he added.
