Youth jumps off bridge into Netravati in suicide bid; rescued by fishermen

Mangaluru, Aug 5: A week after Café Coffee Day chairman V G Siddhartha allegedly ended his life by jumping off the Nethravati bridge, another person from Kadur in Chikkamagaluru, tried to commit suicide in a similar way. However, he was rescued by local fishermen and others who were present at the spot.

Girish, 32, a resident of Kadur in Chikkamagaluru, was shifted to a private hospital for treatment, after allegedly attempting to commit suicide. According to police, the incident took place around 6.30pm.

Girish jumped off the bridge to allegedly end his life, he however then tried to swim to the shore, and was quickly noticed by local fishermen, who were nearby, as well people who were present on the bridge. He was rescued from drowning, and was shifted to a hospital.

Police added that Girish, who is married, was running a tender coconut stall near Urva Store. A case has been registered at the Kankanady Town police station in this regard.

After Siddhartha died after jumping from the bridge, police, the public and political representatives have urged the authorities to install CCTVs across the 900-metre-bridge that connects Karnataka and Kerala.

City Police said police personnel will man the Netravati bridge hereafter.

New Delhi, Jul 27: A month after banning 59 Chinese applications, the government of Indian has now reportedly banned 47 more apps of Chinese origin in the country. According to sources, the 47 banned Chinese apps were operating as clones of the earlier banned apps. 

The list of the 47 Chinese applications banned by the Indian government will be released soon.

India has also prepared a list of over 250 Chinese apps, including apps linked to Alibaba, that it will examine for any user privacy or national security violations, government sources said. The list also includes Tencent-backed gaming app PUBG.

Some top gaming Chinese applications are also expected to be banned in the new list that is being drawn up, sources said. The Chinese applications, that are being reviewed, have allegedly been sharing data with the Chinese agencies.

Today's decision follows after a high-profile ban of 59 Chinese apps including TikTok, as border tensions continued in Ladakh after a violent, fatal face-off between the Indian and Chinese armies. The government said these apps were engaged in activities that were prejudicial to the sovereignty, integrity and defence of India.

A government press release announcing the ban stated: "The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking it's power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order".

A day later, Google said it has removed all the banned applications from the Play Store. Following the ban, TikTok refuted the claims that suggest it will pursue legal action against the Indian government for banning the app in India.

Reacting to the 59 apps banned by India, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the country is "strongly concerned regarding the decision of the Indian government".

“China is strongly concerned, verifying the situation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

"We want to stress that the Chinese government always asks Chinese businesses to abide by international and local laws-regulations. The Indian government has a responsibility to uphold the legal rights of international investors including Chinese ones," Zhao Lijian said.

Mangaluru, July 13: With the confirmation of four more deaths related to novel coronavirus, the covid-19 death toll in Dakshina Kannada has mounted to 50.

In fact, the four fatalities had occurred on Saturday. Today the authorities concerned that they were tested positive for Covid-19.

The deceased include two septuagenarians, a sexagenarian, and a 53-year-old. All of them were male.

Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh revealed that their comorbidities were diabetes in ICU, pneumonia in ICU, hepatitis in ICU, severe acute  respiratory infection and carcinoma of the lung respectively.

New Delhi, May 8: After deadly styrene gas leak in Visakhapatnam, Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister D V Sadananda Gowda urged all public and private chemical makers to exercise caution and care while reopening their plants.

Union Environment Ministry and State Pollution Control Boards have also issued separate directives to all companies to take extreme precaution while restarting their units that remained suspended due to the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country, he said.

There was a gas leak from LG Polymers plant at Visakhapatnam in the early hours on Thursday, causing 10 deaths and hundreds of people getting hospitalised.

"LG Polymers does not come under direct control of our ministry. However, we have asked all public and private chemicals manufacturers to exercise caution and care while reopening their plants," Gowda told PTI.

The minister said his officers are coordinating with the Andhra Pradesh government.

He further said LG Polymers, a multinational chemical company, had kept its unit ready for reopening after one and half month of lockdown. The unit started leaking at around 3.40 am on Thursday due to pressure.

"The toxic gas leak has affected both people and animals. Around 850 people have been hospitalised," Gowda said, adding that measures have been taken to control the situation at the plant site and final updates are awaited.

At present, Indian chemicals market size is about USD 163 billion, which is only three per cent of the global chemical industry of USD 5 trillion, as per the official data.
