Bengaluru, Nov 30: The police have cracked the murder case of an elderly couple, whose decomposed bodies were recovered on Tuesday night from their residence in east Bengaluru.

According to police Govindan (65), a retired BEL employee, and his wife Sarjomma (60) were killed by their grandson who wanted to buy a sports bike from the money and jewellery he stole after murdering them. Pramod (22), grandson of the murdered couple, his associates Praveen (20) and Pasha (20) are now in police custody.

The couple was found murdered on November 28 after neighbours complained of LPG gas leak from their house. The couple were beaten and stabbed to death on November 26.

The couple’s daughter Usha, also the killer's mother, lives in the same compound and went down to check about the gas leak complaints. She found the rear door of the house open and few of her parents' clothes burnt.

Usha ran out of the house screaming having seen her parents' bodies and blood stains. Neighbours then called the police. Both the victims were tied with clothes and their faces had been covered, police said.

Police later picked up Pramod on Tuesday night. Based on information he provided, they arrested Praveen Wednesday morning. They had to shoot the third accused Pasha on the leg when he tried to launch an escape bid by attacking the police constable. Police sub-inspector Prashila shot Pasha to defend herself and members of her team before arresting him.

Police said Pramod had been involved in house break thefts, while Praveen worked for a vehicle servicing station. Pasha was a bike thief.

The couple was slaughtered between 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm, police said. Usha, a staff nurse at a private hospital- had been living in the same compound as her parents for the past four years.

Police suspect the murder to be for gains. On Sunday, Pramod entered his grandparents' home and unlatched the rear door to let Praveen and Pasha inside.

They hit Sarjomma's head with an iron club. When Govindan rushed into the kitchen hearing his wife's screams, the accused struck him with the same club and stabbed him multiple times.

The trio made off with 300 grams of gold ornaments and Rs 50,000 in cash. Police later recovered the ornaments though they had spent some of the money. "We're probing more angles," city police commissioner T Suneel Kumar said.

He said police would take Usha's statement to determine if she was involved in the crime directly or indirectly. Kumar lauded the cops for cracking the case within hours after the murders were discovered.

Usha told the police that her parents were planning to leave for Om Shakthi temple in Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu) on Sunday afternoon. The silent house did not raise any suspicions as she expected the elderly couple to return on Tuesday.

The couple also had two sons besides Usha. One of them had died and his wife and children live in Mysuru. The second son, who had hearing and speech impairments, lives separately in the city with wife and children.

Usha told the police that her father was embroiled in property disputes and there had been a few unnatural deaths in the family. While a family member hung himself by a telephone cord, another died in road accident. Usha told the police that her father Govindan owned several properties.

He murdered his grand parents. Police should give the chance to correct it. It should not be a death punishment to him. Life term imprisonment is fine

Bengaluru, Aug 4: With preparations underway for conducting exams for the final semester/ year students in the state, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwathnarayan on Monday directed the respective universities to conduct exams for the backlog papers as well.

"In the wake of COVID-19, it has been decided to hold exams only for the students of final semester/year courses. It has come to our notice that some universities have decided against conducting exams for final year students who have a backlog to clear from previous semesters. This is unpardonable," the Deputy Chief Minister said.

"Our intention is to see that the final year students finish their course. In the present situation, conducting only final semester exams won't help. We have to help the students in clearing their backlogs," added Ashwathnarayan, directing all universities to compulsorily conduct these exams.

Meanwhile, Ashwathnarayan thanked the staff and officials of various government departments who were responsible for successfully conducting the CET exams even amidst the difficult situation in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

"In all, 1,94,419 students had registered for the CET exams, of which 1,75,428 wrote the exams. The percentage of students who took up the exams this year was equivalent to that of the previous years, in normal times," the DCM informed.

"After we successfully conducted the exams, Arunachal Pradesh is going to conduct the Public Service Commission exams on the lines of how we successfully conducted the exams. Likewise, even our KPSC has said it will conduct the exams. We must appreciate the good work of the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), which has set an example for others," Ashwathnarayan said.

The deputy chief minister said that 33 colleges in various districts across the state faced shortage of land and that it is the responsibility of the District Commissioners (DCs) to get the lands sanctioned for all these colleges.
In Bagalkot district alone land has not been sanctioned for six degree colleges, he said.

Reacting to this, Bagalkot DC Captain Rajendra assured to look into the matter as soon as he receives the proposal from department officials.

"Similarly, there is shortage of land for five Diploma colleges and 28 ITI colleges in different parts of the state. The DCs must immediately pay attention to this. Once they get the land, buildings will come up within no time," the Karnataka deputy chief minister said.

Mangaluru, Feb 17: Kambala superstar Shrinivas Gowda, who is drawing comparisons to ace sprinter Usain Bolt, has reportedly refused to take part in athletics trials with the Sports Authority of India.

28-year-old Gowda, who hails from Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada, was celebrated as a potential Olympian after a clip of his race went viral, amid claims that he had done 100m in 9.55 seconds, against Bolt's record of 9.58. He has so far won 32 medals in 11 kambala events this season.

Union sports minister Kiren Rijiju and SAI said Gowda would appear for trials at SAI's Bengaluru centre on Monday. The government "will do everything to identify sporting talents", Rijiju had tweeted.

"I will meet the Chief Minister. I am keen on continuing in kambala," Gowda said. Asked about the clamour for a crossover into athletics, he said, "For the time being I have no plans to appear for SAI trials. I am busy with the Kambala season and will consider meeting them following that and after consulting my well-wishers."

New Delhi, Mar 2: The bloodthirsty arsonists allegedly hired by pro-CAA politicians in the capital of India to target Muslims, did not spare even the house of a Muslim leader of BJP.

Akhtar Raza, the BJP’s minority cell vice-president for the Delhi Northeast district, is now not in a position to share his pain with anyone.

Even the police hadn’t come to his rescue, when the mob raising “Jai Sri Ram” slogans burnt down his house at Bhagirathi Vihar Nalla Road in northeast Delhi last week.

“They were chanting slogans. Around 7pm, they started throwing stones at us. I called for police help. But the police asked me to leave. We managed to flee before they burnt my house and destroyed everything,” Raza, who returned today to witness the destruction, told media persons.

“Those who attacked us were not locals. They were outsiders. They managed to identify and burn down all the 19 houses belonging to Muslims in this lane,” Raza said.

Apart from all the belongings in the house of Raza, the arsonists also have burnt down six vehicles belonging to his family.

Raza is sad that no one from BJP contacted him after the violence even though he has been serving the party and promoting its ideology for past five years. “No party leader contacted me. There was no phone call. There was no relief or special treatment or anything,” Raza said.

Interestingly, Raza is still indentifies himself as a BJP leader. “I belonged to BJP. I may continue in the party,” he said.

The locality remained tense on Sunday too. On Monday, several groups distributed relief materials among people who had queued up to collect them. In front of Raza’s house is a lane from which several bodies of innocent Muslims have been recovered.
