Youth tails woman, stabs her to death

February 16, 2014

Youth_tails_womanNew Delhi, Feb 16: An assailant plunged a knife into the heart of a 26-year-old married woman in Karol Bagh around 7.30pm on Valentine's Day, killing her almost instantly.

The victim, Simranjeet Kaur, worked as human resources manager for a Noida MNC. She was about to enter her cousin's house when the killer, who was following her, waylaid and stabbed her with a new double-edged knife which he left behind.

Video footage from CCTV cameras installed in nearby houses showed a young man in a dark jeans and white jacket trail the woman, stab her and scamper off in a flash. Investigators said the murder could have resulted from personal enmity or could be the doing of an admirer she did not know.

A robbery is being ruled out because the assailant did not touch the victim's purse, mobile phone and laptop, and rarely do robbers use new knives. Her husband hasn't been given a clean chit yet. "We are probing all angles. Teams have been formed to crack the case," Sandeep Goyal, joint CP (central range) said.

Simranjeet lived with her husband of two years at Nanakpura in south Delhi. Her husband, Manveet Singh, works for IT major HCL, police said. Her parents live in Karol Bagh's West Extension and her cousin resides in a house two blocks away.

Killer ran away leaving behind knife, valuables

The victim's cousin had given birth a week ago and returned home from hospital on Friday. Simranjeet was visiting her and had left her Noida office around 6.30pm. She boarded the Metro and spoke to her husband 15 minutes before the train pulled up at Karol Bagh.

Her cousin's house is a 10-minute walk from the station and Simranjeet left the station between 7.15pm and 7.20pm. It's not clear where the killer began stalking her, for the metro station's CCTV didn't catch him. But two close-circuit cameras mounted on houses near the crime scene show her casually walk down the lane leading up to her destination .

It's here that the assailant, seemingly in his twenties, shows up for the first time. Around 7.35pm, both are visible in the footage.

The man furtively looks behind to check if someone else is in the lane. Just about that time, a scooterist zips past and takes a u-turn. He's among the suspects. The killer strikes between 7.36pm and 7.37pm and the victim cries out for help. Moments later, relatives rush out. "I heard her scream 'chor chor'. She lay on the road drenched in blood.

The knife, her laptop, phone and wallet were strewn around. We raised an alarm, picked her up and rushed to Ganga Ram hospital where doctors declared her dead," Prabhjot Singh, the victim's uncle, said.

The view from another camera showed the same suspect running away. Policemen rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. The murder weapon was seized and forensic teams lifted fingerprints . The body was sent for postmortem , which was conducted on Saturday and handed over to the family. Simranjeet's husband and family took her body to their hometown in Jalandhar on Saturday where her last rites were performed.

Unanswered questions

She was stabbed in the heart on Valentine's Day. Was this handiwork of a secret admirer? Was it a failed robbery attempt? Simran screamed 'chor chor', indicating she didn't know the attacker If she was killed during a robbery bid, why didn't the man take her laptop, phone and wallet? Nobody knew about her plan to visit the cousin's house other than the husband, whom she had called from Metro. How could an outsider manage to follow her? Was it a case of mistaken identity?

Patna, Jul 17: A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a security guard at the Covid-19 quarantine center of the Patna Medical College Hospital where she was admitted after being rescued from a railway station, police said on Thursday.

The accused, Mahesh (40), was arrested on Wednesday night after being booked under the POCSO Act and other relevant IPC sections by the Pir Bahore police station, according to Arti Jaiswal, the in-charge of the women's police station here.

“The accused is being sent to jail while the victim will be undergoing medical tests on Thursday, as is the norm for all sexual assault survivors," Jaiswal said.

The girl had run away from her home in Nalanda district more than a week ago and reached Barh railway station on the outskirts of Patna to catch a train for Kolkata where her father is a daily wage-earner, police said.

She was spotted by Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel who informed the child helpline. The child helpline personnel, taking note of the girl’s tender age and her disturbed frame of mind, convinced her not to undertake the journey and brought her to the hospital’s quarantine ward for COVID-19 suspects as a precautionary measure, they said.

On the night of July 8, a few hours after the girl's arrival at the hospital, she was caught hold of by the accused inside the bathroom and allegedly raped. The accused also threatened her with dire consequences if she spilt the beans and, as per the FIR, kept harassing her sexually.

She finally decided to speak up when another girl, carrying a mobile phone, was similarly brought to the hospital by child helpline a couple of days ago. Using the fellow inmate’s phone, she narrated her ordeal to the helpline personnel who informed the police.

“Her Covid-19 test report is negative. After her examination, for the sexual assault, by a six-member medical board is over, she will be sent to a shelter home by the child helpline," Jaiswal said.

Meanwhile, state women’s commission chairperson Dilmani Mishra strongly reacted to the incident and said, “We are waiting for the medical reports of the girl. We will ensure that justice is done in the matter.”

Warangal, May 26: A 26-year-old man from Bihar was arrested here for murdering nine people by throwing them into a well to cover the murder of a woman, police said on Monday.

Dr Ravinder, Commissioner of Police (CP), Warangal, said that the bodies were recovered on May 21 and May 22 from the well. Investigation has revealed that the accused, Sanjay Kumar Yadav, killed all of them to cover up the murder of Rafiqa, with whom he had a relationship.

He said that Yadav got acquainted with a person named Maqsood and his sister-in-law Rafiqa. "Slowly, he came close to Rafiqa and started living together with her three children. Yadav tried to misbehave with Rafiqa's 15-year-old daughter. Rafiqa did not like this and threatened to lodge a complaint against him," Ravinder said.

"Then, Yadav planned to kill Rafiqa in order to live with her daughter. Yadav promised Rafiqa to marry. They boarded a train to West Bengal from March 7. Yadav mixed sleeping tablets in the food packet and later strangulated her, and threw her body outside the train," he said.

According to police, Yadav later came back to Warangal but Maqsood's wife Nisha started questioning him about the whereabouts of Rafiqa.

"Nisha threatened to lodge a police complaint against him. With a premeditated motive, from May 16 to May 20, he visited Maqsood's family who stayed in a gunny bag factory," he said.

Yadav purchased sleeping pills from Warangal and mixed in the food on the birthday of Maqsood's elder son on May 20, police said.

"Maqsood and his five family members were living there. Yadav mixed sleeping pills in the food and later they consumed it. Maqsood's family friend Shakeel was also there. Then, he went to the first floor of the factory where two labourers were staying. He mixed sleeping pills in their food too. He suspected that they may get up and create a problem. To cover up the murder of Rafiqa, he killed nine people," Ravinder said.

At around 12:30 am, Yadav woke up and saw that everyone is asleep, according to police.

"Then, he used the gunny bags to drag all the nine people into the well. He threw the gunny bag one by one into the well," Ravinder said.

According to the police, six teams were deployed to investigate the case.

"Yadav has been arrested now and will be taken to police custody. We will collect all evidence and ensure that he gets maximum punishment for this offence," Ravinder said.

Yadav will be released by court saying that he is mentally sick and he did not kill 10 people intentionally.
