Mangaluru: Dec 21: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s Media Advisor Dinesh Amin Mattu said intolerance is not a new development in the country and it has been in existence in the country from the last 5,000 years.

Presiding over the valedictory programme of Jana Nudi convention organised by Abhimatha organisation at Shanthi Kirana in Nanthoor, Mangaluru, on Sunday, he said that one should not forget the past. The youths should gain knowledge on history, he said.
One should not close his eyes to the negative developments around, but should keep the eyes wide open, Mattu said and stressed on the need to expose the powers which are exploiting the people in the name of culture and religion.

Speaking on the return of awards, Mattu said the development is inevitable as the writers who speak the truth have always been underestimated and are even targeted. He observed that one should ideologically protest against the hijacking of the right to expression enjoyed by the writers by reading their thoughts more and more.

Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations President Prof Narendra Nayak said the movement against the feudalism has been off-track. The movements need empowerment as the self-proclaimed religious leaders are dominating the society on the pretext of propagation of culture. The law and order is being misused by these powers, he said.

Prof Nayak said non-science and pseudo-science are being propagated in the name of Swadeshi.

Lamenting over the differences of opinion among various secular organisations, Prof Rahmath Tarikere of Hampi Kannada University all those organisations should come under a single roof and fight against the forces which have been attempting to impose uniform culture on the entire country.

“Diversity is our country’s basic fabric and it should be cherished, not broken,” he observed.

He said that the portraying of a particular community in poor light in NCERT text books is anti-democratic and lamented that the positive values, such as the communal harmony among various communities, are not being highlighted.

Earlier, in a session on ‘Developmental Challenges,’ Hampi Kannada University Professor Dr Chandra Poojary said there is no difference between the BJP and the Congress when it comes to the economic policies and the concept of development.

He said both the political parties are favouring market-oriented policies. They believe that development is nothing, but progress of the corporate sector, Prof Poojary observed.

Dr H V Vasu of Janashakti Vedike said, “The programmes that are against the interest of the people also have a mask of development. There is a need for a programme aimed at integrated welfare of the people of the country. Development is possible when we find solutions to the problems haunting education, agriculture and cooperative sectors.” Women’s University, Vijayapura, Professor Dr R Sunandamma also spoke on the occasion.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 11: In a unique form of protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a bridegroom in Kerala, Haja Hussain, came for his wedding ceremony riding on a camel holding an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) poster in his hands, on the outskirts of the capital city on Monday.

Accompanied by a large crowd mostly comprising his friends and relatives, Hussain carried a placard which read "Reject CAA, Boycott NRC and NPR" as he arrived at the wedding hall in Vazhimukku, about 20 km from Thiruvananthapuram, on a camel back.

Haja Hussain said that he chose to do this to express his protest against the CAA.

"Along with the ' mahr' (the custom where the groom hands over gold or money to the bride), I also gave a copy of the Constitution. CAA should be rejected," said Haja Hussain, who is a local businessman.

Bengaluru, Apr 28: A local court in Karnataka on Tuesday granted bail to a CRPF commando who was arrested by state police officials for alleged assault on them during COVID-19 lockdown duty, a charge contested strongly by the paramilitary.

The jawan has been taken to the jungle warfare training school of the paramilitary force in Belagavi district, a senior official said.

Constable Sachin Savant of the 207th CoBRA battalion was granted regular bail by a court located in Chikodi taluka of the district, he said.

A team of CRPF and CoBRA officials were present in the court during the proceeding during which the state police did not oppose the bail, the official said.

The commando was arrested by police on April 23 from Examba village (Belagavi district) when he was washing his bike outside his house without wearing a mask, as required under the coronavirus prevention protocol.

An altercation and physical fight took place between the two sides, following which the trooper was taken to the local police station and arrested.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had on Monday taken up the case with the Karnataka director general of police (DGP), calling the incident "unpleasant".

The CRPF letter said commando Savant was "manhandled, ill-treated, paraded to the police station barefooted, kept in chains and handcuffs" by police personnel and sought the intervention of state Director General of Police Praveen Sood.

The paramilitary had said that from the scrutiny of a viral video on social media of the incident "it is apparent that the conduct of the police personnel was not citizen-centric".

A police report had said the CoBRA commando "started the altercation" with the beat constable and another policeman accompanying him, and "assaulted" them.

As per the official Twitter handle of the Karnataka DGP's on Monday evening, "IGP (inspector-general of police) Belagavi has been asked to enquire into the incident involving the CRPF constable and action will be taken against guilty after receipt of the report".

The Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit of the CRPF specialises in guerrilla tactics and jungle warfare.
