Zaibunnisa death case: Guilty will be punished, says child rights panel chief

Managluru, Jan 29: Kripa Alva, chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) has said that legal action will be initiated against those who were responsible for the death of Zaibunissa, a Class 8 student of K R Pete Navodaya Minority Residential School in Mandya.

Daughter of Mohammed Ibrahim and Zubaida couple from Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district, 14-year-old Zaibunnisa was found hanging under suspicious circumstances in her hostel room on January 24. The police have already arrested her teacher Ravi who allegedly used to torture her.

Ms Alva, who visited the aggrieved parents in their house at Ninnikal in Uppinangady near here on Sunday, said that guilty in the case will be punished. She said that the education department officials from Mandya and teachers of K R Pete Navodaya Minority Residential School will be asked to appear before the Commission within a week for an investigation into the issue.

Speaking to media persons, she said: "I have spoken to Jaibunissa's parents, sister and brother on the condition at the residential school. According to their statement, there are a few problems at the residential school which will be verified." She added that she will also seek a report from the police station.

Ms Alva said that she will hold talks with the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Tanveer Sait to conduct a probe into the issue by the education department.

Chikkamagaluru, Jun 13: Deputy Commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautham said that movement of heavy vehicles has been banned from Tanikodi to S K Border on NH 169 (Mangaluru to Solapur) from June 15 to August 15.

In an official statement issued here on Friday evening, he said that due to heavy rain lashing in the District the minor bridges on the stretch at Umbalagere, Goravanahalli and Gulaganji are in a dilapidated condition. As a precautionary measure, the movement of heavy vehicles has been banned.

As an alternative, all the vehicles (below 15 tonnes) from Chikmagalur can travel via Baliho Nur-Magundi-Kalasa-Kudremukh-SK Border. The vehicles from NR Pura (below 15 tonnes) should travel via Koppa-Hariharapura-Bidaragodu-Agumbe.

Mandya, Aug 1: In a terrific incident, a college student has stabbed his own mother to death in Karnataka’s Mandya town over a trivial issue. The police have managed to nab the accused. 

According to police, the boy was irked by his mother rebuking him for staying out with his friends late in the night.

On Wednesday (July 29), she scolded him for not listening to her advice, following which he stabbed her to death, the official said. 

The student was arrested on July 30. He reportedly confessed to the crime. 

A police officer said that the woman was upset over her son frequently spending time with his friends till late in the night.

Mangaluru, Apr 4: About 20,000 quintal boiled rice has been distributed among the ration card holders through Public Distribution System, District-in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said here on Saturday.

As people in the district prefer boiled rice over white rice, the government has given approval for distributing boiled rice. From next month, only boiled rice will be distributed in the district at fair price shops.

In the last two days, rice has been distributed among 61,302 cardholders in the district.
