127 couples including 19 inter-religious enter wedlock in Dharmasthala

Mangaluru, Apr 30: As the sun set, as many as 127 couple entered into wedlock at the 45ht free mass marriage ceremony organised by Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade at Dharmasthala on Friday.

The rituals of tying knots were held at the Amrutavarshini Sabha Bhavana at the auspicious Godhooli Lagna at 6.50 in the evening. The marriage rituals were held as per the customs of their respective castes.

A total of 22 pairs belonging to scheduled caste and 19 inter-religious marriages were the speciality of this time. The 11,925th pair, Manoj A S of Chikkamagaluru and Divya, was a special pair as the bride is hearing and speech impaired.

Traditional cloth and jewels were provided to the brides and bridegrooms. The newly-married couples took oath of leading a life of moral values.

Speaking on the occasion, Muzrai Minister Mahohar Tahsildar said the inter-religious marriage is helpful in the eradication of caste system.

He said the government provides Rs 50,000 if the people belonging to different castes tie nuptial knots in mass marriages.

He said Rs 3 lakh will be provided to a woman belonging to Scheduled Caste, if she marries a man from another caste and Rs 2 lakh will be provided to a man belonging to Scheduled Caste, if he marries a woman from another caste. The chief minister?has reserved separate funds in the budget for the purpose, he added.

Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade said it is a misconception that the mass marriages are meant for only poor.

Former cricketer Brijesh Patel, Hemavati V Heggade, D Harshendra Heggade, MLA?K Vasant Bangera and others were present on the occasion.

A very good initiative for stopping the caste systems. But then why are the marriage rituals being conducted aiding to each caste?

Bengaluru, Jan 22: Karnataka home minister Basavaraj Bommai today refused to respond when a journalist asked him why Aditya Rao, who was arrested on charge of planting bomb at Mangaluru International Airport, can’t be called a terrorist.

Responding to another query of another journalist on the sidelines of a private program, here, Mr Bommai said all airports in the state would soon have bomb disposal squads.

"After the Mangaluru airport bomb incident, a thought has been given to establishing bomb disposal squads near airports in the state. Hubballi and Kalburgi airports too will have them," he said.

He said, Aditya Rao resident of Udupi who has been in a frustrated state for not getting employment and earlier too arrested for hoax calls surrendered at the DGP office in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The Mangaluru police will take him into custody for investigations, he added.

Despite the suspect surrendering to the police, investigations into the case will continue, he said.

He further added, 'Irrespective of the organisations the accused belongs to, he will be punished.”

Explosives used in the Mangaluru airport bomb have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis and investigation. National Security Guards too were collecting details, he stated.

He then went on to slam Opposition parties over Mangaluru Airport bomb incident. “State police, on getting information about the suspected bag, had acted swiftly and diffused it. The opposition has resorted to politics and using the incident to appease minorities,” he said.

He also termed that the statements made by the opposition would instigate anti-national elements.

Bengaluru, June 14: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa-led BJP government of Karnataka has once again urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union BJP government to release GST compensation worth Rs 10,208 crore that is due for the state.

The request was placed with Finance Minister Niramala Sitharaman during the 40th GST council meeting, in which Karnataka Home Minister and state’s representative to the council, Basavaraj Bommai, participated.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Bommai said that Rs 10,208 crore was due from the Centre as GST compensation for four four months - from March to May.

“We have requested the Centre to release Rs 1,460 crore - pertaining to GST compensation for the month of March - as soon as possible due to the dire financial conditions of the state,” he said.

Bommai said that the state was confident that the funds will be released soon, noting that Karnataka had recently received Rs 4,314 in GST compensation for three months, between December 2019 to February 2020.

Meanwhile, the state also proposed the Council to reduce penalty for delay in filing GST. Bommai said that while people are made to pay 18% of the tax as fine in delay in payment, Karnataka has asked the Centre to reduce the percentage by half to 9%.

Bengaluru, Jan 19: Two college students have been arrested for allegedly spiking their female friend's drink and sexually assaulting her in Bengaluru.

The 19-year-old victim filed a complaint against the two accused, following which they were nabbed. In her complaint, the victim said that the two friends persuaded her to accompany them in a party where one of them allegedly spiked her drink.

Feeling unwell, she wanted to return to her PG, but the two managed to convince her to stay back at their place, where they allegedly sexually assaulted her.

"After some time one of my friends gave me something to drink and I vomited. I felt uneasy and decided to return to my PG. However, he forced me to go to his house stating that I was not in a condition to go to my PG. He convinced me saying that I can go home in the morning. I did not suspect any foul-play as he was a friend," the victim was quoted as saying by the publication.
