13 devotees drown as coracle overturns during Ganesh idol immersion

Shivamogga, Sep 8: As many as 13 persons are suspected to have drowned when a coracle overturned in the Tungabhadra river near Hadonahalli during the immersion of the Ganesh idol on Wednesday.

The bodies of seven victims — Manjappa (35), Veerabhadra (28), Shivakumar (22), Veeresh (20), Jeevan (21), Ganesh (21), and Ramesh (23) were recovered by divers from Harihar town and the Fire and Emergency Services personnel.

The bodies of the six other victims — Nayan, Shankar, Gangesh, Chandrappa, Sagar and Ramesh are yet to be traced.

All the victims, aged between 20 and 35, were residents of Hadonahalli. Jeevan and Ganesh were students of a private engineering college in Shivamogga, while Manjappa and Chandrappa were married and have two children each.Strong currents

The incident took place at around 1 p.m. According to Sharanappa, an eyewitness, 22 youth ventured into the river to immerse the idol. When the coracle reached the centre of the river where the water current was strong, it overturned. Nine of them jumped off and swam to safety.

Superintendent of Police Abhinav Khare told presspersons that overloading of the coracle resulted in the accident. He said a team of expert divers from the Indian Navy in Karwar will join the search operations on Thursday.

Wednesday's search operations were suspended in the evening and it would start at first light on Thursday, he added.

As the news of the tragedy spread, relatives of the victims and neighbouring villagers thronged the banks of the river.

Police personnel had a difficult time managing the crowd. Deputy Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri supervised the search operations.

Mangaluru, Ma 9: Three more persons from Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada district tested positive for Covid-19 today. All three are members of a family.

The infection is reportedly linked to First Neuro Hospital of Mangaluru, which has emerged as a coronavirus hub in coastal Karnataka.

With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in the district mounted to 31 including six outsiders. Three of them have lost their lives. Currently there are 15 active cases in the district.

The newly identified coronavirus patients are a 30-year-old man and two elderly women aged 60 and 70 years.

They have contracted the infection from a 69-year-old man from Bantwal who was confirmed with COVID-19 infection on May 1. All the three members now infected belong to his family.

The man had got the infection from a woman identified as P-390. He happens to be a relative and neighbour of the deceased woman who belonged to Bantwal Kasaba village. Eight  members of his family were quarantined, of whom three tested positive today.

Dubai, Feb 19: A 25-year-old Indian engineer allegedly fell to his death from a residential apartment in Dubai, according to a media report.

Sabeel Rahman, from Kerala who has been living in Dubai since 2018, fell off the building near his work site, The Khaleej Times quoted a social worker as saying.

Naseer Vatanapally, the social worker, is assisting the family to repatriate his mortal remains back home to Thirur in Malappuram district, the report said.

"The case is a bit unusual. We''re not sure why he went to the building near his worksite," said Naseer Vatanapally.

"His family is unaware of any issues he may have faced. He had asked his brother to collect a new mobile phone he had purchased online - which they received. He had no reason to take his life," he added.

Rahman was the youngest of four siblings. The devastated family is awaiting details from the Rashidiya Police Station. "Following legal procedures, we will repatriate his body back home," he said.

Udupi, May 2: During the lockdown period the Department of Public Library digitised more books to the Karnataka Digital Public Library (KDPL).

According to the data released by the KDPL issued here on Saturday , as on April 29, 89,239 people from the State have already registered for the digital library.  From these 1,807 are from Dakshina Kannada district and 605 from the Udupi district.

The digital library already has a repository of 35,500 e-books, 4,800 videos, 59,980 e-journals and 1,112 items for children.
