Rampur, May 29: In a shocking incident, a video footage showing 14 youths molesting two girls in broad daylight in a village under Tanda police station in Rampur has gone viral on the social media, triggering an outrage in the state where the incidents of crime have seen a spurt recently.rampur

In the video, the girls are seen objecting to the assault and trying to defend themselves while they are surrounded and groped by the assailants, who also filmed the act on their cellphone cameras and later put it on Facebook.

Police have arrested the main accused after registering a case against 14 youths who have been identified. "An FIR has been lodged against 14 persons. Main accused Shahnawaz has been arrested and the probe is on," principal secretary (home) Arvind Kumar said in Lucknow. Rampur senior superintendent of police Vipin Tanda told TOI that the other accused will be arrested soon.

In the video, the group of youths can be seen waylaying two girls in a desolate village area. They are seen molesting and groping one of the girls. One accused even lifts her. While the girls are seen pleading with them to let them go, the youths are seen laughing and a few of them shooting the incident. "Tumahre ghar main behen nahi hai kya (Don't you have sisters)?" the girl is heard telling the accused who keep molesting her.

According to the police, no one from the victims' families approached them and they registered an FIR on their own. "The video was uploaded and went viral on Sunday, following which we registered the case," said Rampal Singh, SHO, Tanda kotwali. An FIR has been registered under IPC's sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (assault or use of force to woman with intent to disrobe) and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act against the 14 men.

The principal secretary (home) said accused Shahnawaj, Nawved, Farmaan, Jahane Aalam and Saddam are of Kuwakhera village of Rampur district. "Attempts are on to nab the other accused," he said.

Rampur SSP Vipin Tanda, who inspected the crime scene, said crime branch and surveillance teams have been conducting raids in many villages to arrest the other accused.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi, while talking to reporters in Delhi, questioned if this was the effective law and order promised by BJP before coming to power two months ago. He said the incidents of crime have witnessed a spurt in UP since the Yogi Aditya Nath government took over and in this context, mentioned the Saharanpur caste violence too.

Notably, after coming to power in March this year, the Yogi government had launched 'anti-Romeo' squads to curb harassment of women. However, the initiative had drawn much flak after a spate of cases of moral policing and police excesses was reported from across the state. To save face, the state government then renamed the squads as 'Nari Suraksha Bal' (women's protection force) and issued them guidelines.

New Delhi, Jan 18: Two men accused of kidnapping and brutally raping a five-year-old girl in Delhi in 2013 have been held guilty by a court in the national capital today. The POCSO court, which will announce the quantum of punishment on January 30, said, "In our society the minor girls are worshipped as goddess on certain occasions but in the present case the victim child had experienced exceptional depravity and extreme brutality."

"The crime against the victim was committed in a most grotesque and revolting manner and the collective conscience of the community was shaken," the court added while holding the accused - Manoj Shah and Pradeep Kumar - guilty.

The assault which took place just four months after Nirbhaya's brutal rape had grabbed headlines with its shocking details. The girl, who was named Gudiya by sections of the media, went missing and the police told her parents to look for her themselves. She was found two days later, tied in the basement of the east Delhi house she lived in with traces of candles and bottles inside her private parts.

The convicts had fled after raping Gudiya and shoving a candle and bottle inside her private parts, leaving her at Manoj Shah's room, after believing the five-year-old to be dead. The child was rescued 40 hours later on April 17, 2013.

Manoj Shah and Pradeep Kumar were arrested by Delhi police separately from Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga in Bihar respectively in 2013. The charge sheet was filed on May 24 that year and charges were framed by the court on July 11. But, it took more than five years to complete the recording of the statement of 57 prosecution witnesses in the POCSO court.

"Though the trial should have been completed in two years, we are happy we got justice," said the father of the girl.

One of the convicts, Manoj Shah, allegedly assaulted some reporters while being taken out of the courtroom.

May 11: Two youths allegedly gang-raped a teen and then hacked to death her 11-year old brother, who had seen their act, in a bid to hide their crime, at a village in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district, about 300 kilometres from here.

Police sources said that two youths, resident of the same village, barged into the house of the teen, when she was alone, and allegedly gang-raped her.

The victim's minor brother suddenly came into the house and protested after he witnessed his sister being sexually assaulted, sources said. The youths allegedly strangled the minor with a towel.

The alleged culprits, who hailed from influential families, 'forced' the victim's parents to bury their son and warned them against approaching the cops.

The parents, however, gathered courage and met senior police officials in Etah on Sunday after a case was registered in this regard. Police said that the body of the minor would be exhumed and a postmortem examination would be conducted.
