Mangaluru, Aug 7: More than five years after a fight between three friends ended in the death of one among them in this coastal city, a local court yesterday sentenced the two accused to seven years of rigorous imprisonment on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The incident had taken place on April 2, 2015. The victim is K C Sujesh, 33. The convicted are Jeevan, 37, and Dilesh, 35. All three friends hailed from Taliparamba taluk in Kannur district of Kerala.
Pronouncing the judgment, the judge of the sixth additional district and sessions court also ordered the convicted to pay Rs 50,000 as fine.
The three friends from Kerala had come to Mangaluru in a car on April 1 to have some fun as it was a dry day in their state. The next day, the three got drunk and started quarrelling in the lodge over money.
Public prosecutor Judith O M Crasta said that Jeevan had borrowed Rs 30,000 from the victim, Sajesh, who had, in turn, borrowed the same from his aunt to give it to Jeevan. He demanded that Jeevan return the money. Jeevan had lost money gambling in Mangaluru. As their fight escalated, the lodge staff asked the three to leave.
The next day, the body of Sajesh was found at Ujjodi petrol bunk. Sajesh was bludgeoned to death with an interlock brick. During investigation, it came to light that the two had killed Sajesh around 11.30pm on April 2. They were convicted based on circumstantial evidence.
