20 children killed, 12 injured in school bus-lorry collision

Etah (UP), Jan 19: At least 20 children were today killed and several others injured when their school bus collided with a lorry amid dense fog on Aliganj-Paliyali road near here.

The bus was carrying students to J S Vidyaniketan school which had opened despite the district magistrate's orders to keep all schools closed in view of intense cold, officials said.

The mishap occurred near Asadnagar village under Aliganj Kotwali police station area in Etah, which is four hours drive from the national capital.

District Magistrate, Etah, Shambhu Nath put the toll at 20 and said eight of them died on the spot.

Near 12 injured students were rushed to different hospitals, he said.

The toll might increase, local officials feared.

The District Magistrate said orders have been issued to cancel the recognition of the school.

Twelve of those killed have been identified, he said, adding the deceased were in the 5-15 years age bracket.

Soon after getting the news, senior officials rushed to the accident spot and supervised rescue and relief operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the death of children in the mishap.

"Anguished by the tragic accident in UP's Etah district. I share the pain of the bereaved families & condole passing away of young children," he said in a tweet.

"I pray that those injured in the accident in Etah recover at the earliest," he said.

Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav also condoled the death of the children in the mishap.

Bengaluru, Feb 20: German software group SAP said on Thursday that it had temporarily shut down its offices across India for sanitisation after two employees in its Bengaluru Ecoworld office tested positive for H1N1 virus.

"Two SAP India employees based in Bangalore (RMZ Ecoworld office) have tested positive for the H1N1 virus. Detailed contact tracing that the infected colleagues may have come into contact with is underway," SAP India said in an emailed statement.

The company said its offices across Bengaluru, Gurugram and Mumbai have been closed for extensive sanitisation. All employees based in these locations have been asked to work from home till further notice

SAP India also advised its employees to seek medical advice if they or their family members have any symptoms of cold, cough with fever.

H1N1 or swine flu can spread through air. Its symptoms are cough, fever, sore throat, running nose, body ache, headache, chills and fatigue.

Mangaluru, Jan 24: Urwa Police have arrested a 27-year-old youth on charges of chain snatching and recovered around 300 grams of stolen gold chains worth Rs 12 lakhs from him, the police said on Friday.

Mangaluru, May 2:  Dakshina Kannada district administration has taken steps to quarantine people returning after having lost their jobs in foreign countries.

Marriages hall, general halls and hostels are being identified for the purpose, a source said.

Official said that Coronavirus scare also has forced many people from foreign countries, those in including Gulf countries, to return to their native villages.

The Gulf countries are also sending back those staying illegally there. 

Once the flight services resume, thousands of people are likely to return to the country.

Meanwhile, DK deputy commissioner Karnataka held a video conference with Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.
