20 crew members of flooded ship off New Mangalore Port rescued

Mangaluru, Sept 2: In a joint operation, the Indian Coast Guard and the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) rescued at least 20 persons on board dredger Tridevi Prem after it reported flooding in the wee hours of Monday.

The Coast Guard ship Amartya rescued 13 crews onboard dredger anchored within New Mangalore Port limits, in the wee hours of Monday. The remaining seven members of the repair team who were on board were rescued by NMPT Tug Ocean Esteem in coordination with ICGS Amartya.

According to Indian Coast Guard Karnataka Commander S S Dasila, dredger owned by Mercator Limited, Mumbai was anchored within port limits of New Mangalore Port Trust was on a contractual agreement with NMPT for dredging to ensure sufficient depth in channel. The master of vessel had reported flooding in Pump room on August 31.

Later, it was reported to have been under control on the same day. However, Sunday evening, the master again informed Coast Guard and NMPT on the flooding in the same compartment.

A repair team comprising of divers arranged by owner on pursuance of Coast Guard and NMPT, escorted by Deputy Conservator NMPT was embarked on the vessel by a tug. Additionally, though the vessel had even keel, ICGS Amartya on safety patrol along the Coast of Karnataka monitored the situation closely along with ROS (NML).

Meanwhile, the Master and local crew members on board the dredger continued to intimidate the authorities using external sources. At around 9.45 pm, ROS (NML) received a distress message from the vessel, which was relayed to ICGS Amartya and the ship was directed to reach datum at the earliest to ascertain facts, said the Commander.

ICGS Amartya on establishing communication found that apart from 13 crew members of the ship, seven members from repair team were present onboard. On preliminary assessment from outside, the vessel appeared to be stable and no threat to life onboard the vessel was observed. However, the master had expressed his intention of abandoning ship with crew in lifeboat.

Meanwhile, when the situation was being discussed at higher level, the master lowered a lifeboat and 13 crew abandoned the dredger at around 2.30 am, leaving behind the repair team of seven members. ICGS Amartya rushed to the help and rescued all the 13 crew of lifeboat in a rescue operation braving rough weather conditions and heavy rain. The remaining seven members of the repair team were rescued by NMPT Tug Ocean Esteem in coordination with ICGS Amartya, said Dasila.

Shaheen school sedition case: Cops question kids again and again

Bidar, Feb 5: The police has intensified investigation into the 'sedition case' against the management and staff of a school here, where children are facing chare of insulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others, in the context of CAA, in a drama they staged on January 21.

The police again visited Shaheen School on Tuesday and questioned children and staff -- this time in plain clothes, after their questioning of children in uniform on January 28 drew criticism from some quarters, a school official said.

"Morning three police personnel came with two members of Karnataka State Child Rights Protection Commission. Later, the deputy superintendent of police H Basaveshwara joined them.

The cops were in civil dress," the official said.

The police have been questioning the children and staff about those who wrote the script and assigned to deliver specific dialogues.

Police have already arrested Nazbunnisa, the mother of one of the children, who had allegedly delivered the controversial dialogue and their teacher Fareeda Begum, who oversaw the event.

When contacted, the deputy superintendent of police of Bidar H Basaveshwara refused to comment on the matter saying that he was still investigating the case.

Meanwhile in Bengaluru, Congress MLA and former minister U T Khader slammed the BJP government in the state as well as the Centre for "filing sedition charges against people".

Addressing a press conference, he alleged that the Central and state governments were trying to suppress the voice of people in the country using law enforcement agencies.

Khader claimed that the two women who "depicted the problems they were facing" in the drama were booked under the sedition law. During investigation, the children were forced to sit at the police station, he alleged.

Mangaluru, July 31: Coronavirus related deaths in Dakshina Kannada continued to surge, with the district administration recording five more fatalities in a day, thus taking the tally to 155.

The district has recorded multiple deaths every day from July 1 to 31. A majority of the deaths are due to comorbid conditions.

Among the five deaths reported today, a 47-year-old man from Mangaluru, was admitted to private hospital on July 30, and breathed his last on the same day. He was suffering from ARDS, Type 1 respiratory failure, COPD, Type II DM, HTN and died due to cardiac arrest.

Another patient was a 75-year-old man from Bantwal, who was admitted to a private hospital on July 23, and passed away on July 30. He was suffering from acute coronary syndrome, pneumonia (ARDS), metabolic encephalopathy, acute kidney injury, systemic hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The third patient was a 63-year-old man from Mangaluru, who was admitted to a private hospital on July 18, and passed away on July 30. He was suffering from ARDS, septic shock, renal failure, and secondary bacterial infection.

The fourth patient was an 88-year-old woman from Davanagere, who was admitted to a private hospital on July 9, and passed away on July 30. She was suffering from septic shock, and secondary bacterial infection.

The fifth patient was a 75-year-old man from Mangaluru. He was admitted to Wenlock hospital on July 15, and passed away on July 30. He was suffering from refractory ARDS, septic shock, renal failure, acute coronary event, arrhythmias, pulmonary thromboembolism, and hemoperitoneum.

The district administration said that though the above patients contracted coronavirus, the exact cause of their deaths is being investigated by a team of experts and their report is awaited.

On the other hand, Dakshina Kannada district recorded a total of 204 fresh cases, taking the tally to 5,713. Among the 204 new cases are 75 primary contacts, 63 with influenza-like illness (ILI), and 14 with severe acute respiratory illness (SARI). As many as 52 cases are under investigation. As many as 70 patients were discharged on Friday from Wenlock as well as private hospitals.

As per the district health bulletin, a total of 40,706 samples have been tested so far and 34,993 out of them have tested negative. Among the 5,713 positive cases reported in the district, only 2,929 are currently active. As many as 2,631 persons have recovered and been discharged.

3 new COVID-19 cases in Karnataka, tally reaches 503

Bengaluru, Apr 26: Three new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases in the state to 503 as per Karnataka government.

There are 302 active COVID-19 cases in Karnataka presently, while 182 patients have been discharged, 19 deaths have been reported, state government informed.

The total number of positive coronavirus cases across the country are 26,917, including 20,177 active cases of the virus. So far, 5,913 patients have either been cured or discharged while 826 deaths have been recorded in the country, as per data provided by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
