23 universities, 279 technical institutes in India are fake; Delhi tops list

New Delhi, Mar 20: Delhi is the fake Capital with 66 colleges -- the highest for any state in India – offering engineering and other technical courses without the regulator"s permission. There are 279 such technical institutes in the country.

Commerce Simply put, these schools don"t have the authority to grant degrees. Education certificates issued by such colleges are nothing but a piece of paper.

The Capital also has seven of the country"s 23 fake universities, the University Grants Commission has said.

In an annual review, the UGC and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) last month put out a list of such fake institutes on their websites, warning students ahead of the new academic session that kicks in next month.

“We send the list of unapproved and unregulated technical institutions to concerned state authorities for taking appropriate action against such institutions,” an official said.

Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharasthra also have a sizable number of fake technical institutes.

To ensure students don"t apply to such colleges, the technical education regulator, the AICTE, has also issued notices to these schools for not taking its approval.

“Public notices are also published in newspapers cautioning the students not to take admission in such unapproved institutions,” the official said.

Minister of state for human resource development Mahendra Nath Pandey told the Rajya Sabha recently that the ministry had written to state governments to investigate the matter and register police complaints against fake universities.

States have also been asked to initiate proceedings against those involved in defrauding and cheating students “by misrepresenting themselves as "universities" awarding degrees with their name”, Pandey told the Rajya Sabha.

Menace of fake institutes is widespread and is getting increasingly lucrative, as more students look for higher education to improve their job prospects.

HC refuses to entertain plea against domicile reservation in NLSIU, Karnataka

New Delhi, Jul 3: The Delhi High Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea challenging Karnataka government's decision to impose a 25 percent domicile reservation in the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru.

A division bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Subramonium Prasad observed that the impugned law is passed by the State of Karnataka, and the respondent university is also situated in Karnataka.

The court granted liberty to the petitioner to move the appropriate forum with their grievances.

The Karnataka Assembly had passed the National Law School of India (Amendment) Act, 2020 in March this year, which provided a 25 per cent horizontal reservation for students of Karnataka in the NLSIU.

The High Court observed that the main contesting parties in the present case were the NLSIU and the Karnataka Government. As the court did not show any interest in entertaining the plea, the petitioner withdrew the plea.

Mangaluru: St Agnes College celebrates 99th College Day and Merit Programme

St. Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, which is celebrating its centenary year, celebrated 99th college day and merit programme of the academic year 2019-20 in P.U College Auditorium on February 11.

Ms. Philomina Lobo, Retired Director, Secondary Education department of public instructions, Government of India was the chief guest of the programme. The programme began by evoking the blessings of God. Sr Dr M Jeswina A.C, Principal, St Agnes College, Sr Dr M Maria Roopa A.C, the Joint Secretary, Mr. Ronald Pereira PTA Vice President, Mr Charles Pais the Controller of Examinations ,Dr Subha Rao were present.

Ms. Seemanthini, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Applications presented the annual college report digitally, highlighting the achievements of the institution, staff and students for the academic year.

Addressing the students, Ms Philomina Lobo advised, “You have knowledge and intelligence but you need to pray for wisdom. Use your talents in the right way.” She also mentioned that the companies today are looking forward for skilful youngsters and asked the students to “be skilful” in order to achieve success in life.

Students received Principal's role of honour, various scholarships and merit certificates for their excellence in academics. The cabinet members of the current academic year were also awarded on the occasion. The Principal gave a token of gratitude to Ms Philomena Lobo, who is also an alumna of the college. Mrs Meera, HOD, Department of History proposed the vote of thanks.
