Lucknow, Mar 25: Two men have been killed in an encounter blitz in western Uttar Pradesh in a span of 24 hours. The police shot dead the two men in Noida and Saharanpur. Five others who are alleged to be involved in several criminal cases in UP were injured during gunfights with the police.

In Noida, about 15 kilometres from Delhi, police said they shot dead Shravan Chaudhary, who was wanted in murder cases in Noida and Delhi, after a brief gunfight this morning. He carried a reward of Rs. 50,000 for his arrest. An AK-47 assault rifle and a heavy-calibre single-barrelled gun was found with him, the police said.

"Our team had information about the criminal coming to this area... There was heavy firing when he saw us. He used an AK-47," Noida senior police officer Ajay Pal Sharma said.

In another police action in neighbouring Dadri, a man identified as Jitendar who was carrying Rs. 25,000 on his head was arrested after a brief gunfight, police said. He was hit in the exchange of fire.

In Saharanpur, a man identified as Ahsan died of bullet injuries after a gunfight with police. The police said they got an emergency call at 12:10 am on Sunday informing that a man on a motorcycle had snatched someone's cash bag and accelerated away. The motorcyclist also shot at Nawab, who was carrying the cash bag.

The police then alerted all its checkpoints in Saharanpur. One of the checkpoints on Chilkana Road saw two men on a speeding motorcycle and challenged them. The two men fired at the police personnel and the police retaliated; Ahsan, who was wanted in robbery cases, was hit. Police said he died while he was being taken to hospital. They found a stolen motorcycle and a 9 millimetre handgun on him. Sub-inspector Sachin and the man whose cash bag was snatched are being treated for bullet wounds and are out of danger, police said.

In Ghaziabad, police said they shot at a wanted man, Rahul, after a brief chase. A constable identified as Sachin was also injured in the encounter. A motorcycle, cartridges and a gun have been recovered from him. In another encounter in the same city, a man wanted in a murder case who was carrying Rs. 25,000 on his head was shot at by police. The man identified as Sonu, who suffered bullet injuries, has been arrested. A senior police officer of Vijaynagar in Ghaziabad was also injured.

In Muzaffarnagar, two men -- Rahees and Javed -- on a motorcycle who allegedly fired at a police checkpoint when they were asked to stop, were shot at by police in retaliation. A sub-inspector identified as Shoveer Nagar was also hit in the gunfight. All of them are in hospital. Police said Rahees has 10 criminal cases against him and Javed was wanted in six cases, including murder. A motorcycle, two handguns and some bullets were found on them.

The Uttar Pradesh Police in February carried out at least 18 encounters in a span of 48 hours, arresting 25 people on its wanted-list and killing one criminal with a Rs. 25,000 reward on his head in Muzaffarnagar.

In January this year, an eight-year boy was killed after he was caught in crossfire between the police and alleged criminals near Mathura, about 450 km from the state capital Lucknow. The police team reportedly tried to negotiate with the alleged criminals but they started firing, which led to the encounter.

Ahmedabad, Jan 12: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday unveiled over 5.5 lakh postcards written by Ahmedabad residents to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, thanking him for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The postcards were stacked on the dais as Shah addressed a gathering of BJP workers who formed letters `C A A’ in front of him.

The state BJP claimed that the party’s “largest awareness campaign” in support of the CAA had found a place in Limca Book of Records and World Record of India.

“It is not just words but a letter of thanks written from the heart. Our public outreach programme is a reply to the lies being spread against the CAA,” Shah said addressing BJP workers from his former Assembly constituency Naranpura.

The BJP had promised to enact the CAA in its manifesto, he said, asking why the Congress did not oppose it then.

Targeting Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Shah said, “Congress has a government in Rajasthan. The Congress party in that state had promised that Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan would be given citizenship.

“Why do you oppose it when we fulfill the promise made by you?” the Union home minister asked.

“In 2006 and 2009, Ashok Gehlot wrote a letter for the same. We covered Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis, Christians, all of them under the Act, you had only mentioned Hindus and Sikhs,” Shah claimed.

Saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, by bringing in the CAA, granted “human rights to lakhs of people”, he asked why opposition was against it.

He challenged “Rahul Baba” (Congress leader Rahul Gandhi), Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal to show if any provision of the CAA took away the citizenship of Indian Muslims.

“There is no such provision. Lakhs and crores of people have come to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh to save their religion, their self-respect, to save themselves. Where else will they go?” he asked.

“From the first prime minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru to the first home minister, first president of the country, and Mahatma Gandhi himself had said that whoever comes to India from Pakistan will be granted citizenship. Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains coming from Pakistan have nowhere else to go,” he said.

Stockholm, Jan 4: “I’m not the kind of person who celebrates birthdays,” Greta Thunberg said as she turned 17 on Friday, marking the occasion in inimitable style - with a seven-hour hour protest outside the Swedish parliament.

The climate activist braved winter conditions in her native Stockholm to continue the weekly Friday School Strike for the Climate campaign that helped catapult her to international fame.

“I stand here striking from 8am until 3pm as usual ... then I’ll go home,” Thunberg, Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2019, told Reuters.

“I won’t have a birthday cake but we’ll have a dinner.”

It’s been a busy 12 months for Thunberg, who crisscrossed the globe by car, train and boat - but not plane - to demand action on climate change.

“It has been a strange and busy year, but also a great one because I have found something I want to do with my life and what I am doing is having an impact,” she said.

When she was 15, Thunberg began skipping school on Fridays to demonstrate outside the Swedish parliament to push her government to curb carbon emissions. Her campaign gave rise to a grassroots movement that has gone global, inspiring millions of people to take action.
