3-month long cloud seeding launched in Karnataka to stimulate rainfall

Hubli, Aug 2: A three-month-long cloud seeding project has been launched at the Hubballi International Airport here to stimulate artificial rainfall in the North Karnataka region on Friday.

M Deepa, Deputy Commissioner, who launched the project told media: "The three-month-long cloud seeding project will aim at catering rainfall in the North Karnataka region."

Cloud seeding, a type of weather modification, aims to change the amount or type of precipitation in the clouds through the method of sprinkling chemicals into the air.

"We spray chemicals in the clouds to ensure that the precipitation takes place. This precipitation basically leads to rainfall," she said.

Planes have sprayed a chemical named 'silver iodide' on rain-bearing clouds in the last three days in the district of Bagalkot.

The Deputy Commissioner informed that the state had received insufficient rainfall due to which this project was taken up.

"Monsoon in the state has been delayed by a month. We have 20 per cent shortage in the rainfall even after July saw sufficient rains. Navalgund and Kundgol taluks in Dharwad district have also received poor rainfall," she said.

Explaining cloud seeding, Gage Paine, another official who carried out the process said: "We fly on different altitudes and check the moisture in the cloud. We then spray chemicals into the air which ensures rainfall in the region."

Kalaburagi, Apr 17: Hundreds of people participated in the Siddhalingeswara temple chariot festival in Chitapur village on Thursday, violating the lockdown orders.

"Today at 6.30 am, around 100-150 people had come near Siddalingeshwara temple for about 20 mintues and took part in chariot pulling procession," Superintendent of Police Lada Martin said.

A case has been registered against 20 people and further investigation is going to ascertain more details related to the religious gathering.
Meanwhile, a sub-inspector has been suspended.

Thirty-six cases of coronavirus were reported in Karnataka on Thursday, taking the state's tally to 315.

Bengaluru, Jul 15: Karnataka on Wednesday reported 3,176 new cases taking the total count of cases in the state to 47,253.

A total of 1,975 new cases were reported from the Bengaluru alone, the state's health department said.

The toll has gone up to 928 with 87 deaths reported today.

The total count of COVID-19 cases in the country is 9,36,181.

Mangaluru, Jan 21: Operations at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) are normal, a day after security agencies detonated a bomb recovered from the airport in a controlled explosion, an official said on Tuesday.

"All operations are normal at Mangluru International Airport. Everything is normal," told the airport director V.V. Rao to IANS.

Rao said even on Monday, there was no interruption to the airport operations, except for that one recalled IndiGo flight to Bengaluru.

"As the explosive was isolated and taken away from the airport, there was no disturbance to flights, except one Bengaluru-bound IndiGo flight which suffered a few hours delay and took off later," said Rao.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened at the airport.

Mangluru north assistant commissioner of police Belliappa told media that the police are still on the hunt for the culprits who planted the bomb at the airport.

"We are trying to trace the culprits, we got the footage of the suspects," said Belliappa, highlighting that the police are yet to find the name, age and other details of the suspects.

At Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), the number of police personnel has been increased in a bid to tighten the security and 24 hour searching of vehicles is underway.

"We have set up two check posts on the way to the airport and randomly checking vehicles," told Devanahalli assistant commissioner of police Subramanya to media.

All Karnataka airports, including Hubballi and Belagavi, are on high alert.
