4 terrorists killed in Awamiyah shootout

Jeddah, Dec 21: Saudi security forces killed four terrorists in a clash in the Awamiyah region on Saturday, according to the Interior Ministry.

The troops raided a terrorist hide-out in Awamiyah town and killed the four in an exchange of fire.

The dead were behind the killing of a member of the security forces and wounding of another last Sunday, a ministry spokesman said, quoted by the SPA.

They included the leader of the terrorist gang, it said.

A high-ranking security officer and several terror suspects were injured in the operation in the Qatif governorate area.

Ali Abdullah, a wanted terrorist, was gunned down in the shootout with security officers who surrounded a hide-out of terror suspects and wanted criminals in a district near Awamiyah.

The officer, who sustained bullet wounds in the operation, was admitted to hospital in Dammam and is now in stable condition.

Abdullah is wanted for the murder of Abdul Aziz Al-Asiri, a security officer.

The other terrorists killed in the operation are Abdullah Al-Maddad, Rida Al-Bandari and Hassan Al-Meslab.

Al-Maddad is wanted for throwing petrol bombs at police vehicles, according to the report.

Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said terrorists shot at Abdul Rahman Al-Asiri while he was discharging his duty in Nasirah district near Awamiyah last Sunday evening.

He said police raided the terrorist hide-out on Saturday morning after tracking down the killers with public support.

The terrorists opened fire at the security team during the encounter and the four men including the mastermind of Al-Asiri’s murder were killed in the shootout, he said.

Beirut, Aug 7: A devastating explosion that destroyed much of Beirut might have been the result of a missile attack or bomb, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said, as the death toll from the blast rose to 154.

More than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate had been sitting in a port warehouse for six years, but there have been conflicting accounts about why Lebanese authorities decided to empty the shipment of explosive material. The vessel carrying the flammable cargo was heading from Georgia to Mozambique when it stopped in the Lebanese port to load up on iron, according to the ship’s captain.

By Friday, 19 suspects had been arrested and Lebanon’s former director general of customs Chafic Merhy had been questioned by military police.

Al-Jawf, Feb 16: At least 31 people were killed and 12 others were injured here in the al-Maslub district in airstrikes by the Saudi-UAE-led military coalition on Saturday.

"Preliminary field reports indicate that as many as 31 civilians were killed and 12 others injured in strikes that hit al-Hayjah area of the al-Maslub district in al-Jawf governorate," said a statement from the office of the UN resident coordinator and humanitarian coordinator for Yemen.

According to Al Jazeera, the airstrike was conducted hours after the Yemeni Houthis said that they downed a Saudi fighter jet in the same region.

Commenting on the air raids, Lise Grande, the UN's humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, said: "We share our deep condolences with the families of those killed and we pray for the speedy recovery of everyone who has been injured in these terrible strikes."

"So many people are being killed in Yemen - it's a tragedy and it's unjustified. Under international humanitarian law, parties that resort to force is obligated to protect civilians," Grande was quoted as saying.

Abu Dhabi, May 25: Dusty weather to persist in the UAE on Monday as well with a chance of rainfall in parts of the country, the national Met department reported.

According to the NCM, the weather today will be fair to partly cloudy, with a chance of some convective clouds formation by afternoon - eastward and northward - extending to some internal areas that may be associated with some rainfall.

The weather will get humid by night and Tuesday morning over some coastal areas.

NCM predicts a wet Eid break.

Sharjah Police issued a weather warning as heavy rain flooded roads in Sharjah's Kalba among other areas.

Moderate to fresh winds will gain strength during the day causing blowing dust and sand.

The sea will be slight to moderate in the Arabian Gulf and in Oman Sea.

Earlier on Sunday, a weather alert was issued by authorities as moderate to heavy rain - accompanied with hail - lashed parts of the UAE. A rainbow in Dubai skies cheered up residents, celebrating a unique Eid this year amid the coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic - by mostly staying home.
