5 killed as mud collapses into well

TiruvannamalaI, Apr 20: Five people were killed and one person was serious injured when a rope gave way while they were digging a well in Alathur village near Chengam on Friday.

The victims were identified as Velu, 38, of Alliandhal village, Thanikachalam, 50, Ravichandran, 49, Jayamurugan, 25, and Pichandi, 51, all from Thamaraipakkam. Manickam, 52, of Periakilambakkam was badly injured in the accident and was rushed to the Tiruvannamalai Government Hospital.

His condition was said to be critical, according to the doctors at GH.

Police sources said the workers were engaged in removing mud and sludge from the dug-up portion of the well inside a school compound.

While two men went inside the dug-up portion to clear the remaining mud to fix the explosive material, the other four were removing mud and other materials from the other portion of the well by using ‘rope ladder’.

After checking the dug-up portion, the two men urged the others to move to the floor area and when the men tried to climb up the rope, it gave way not being able to withstand their weight.

The three men fell on the other two inside the well along with all the material, killing them instantly. On information, the police removed the bodies to the Government Hospital in Tiruvannamalai.

Protest held

Further investigations are on. On hearing the news, relatives of those killed staged a demonstration on the Kancheepuram-Tiruvannamalai road seeking penal action against school authorities and suitable compensation. Superintendent of Police M.R. Sibi Chakravarthy along with other senior police officials rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters.

Traffic was affected on the main road for sometime, police said.

New Delhi, May 9: A 23-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide at the AIIMS here after her mother died of cancer at the hospital, police said on Saturday.

She was reported missing after her mother passed away on Wednesday and her body was found near the new private ward block of the hospital on Saturday, they said, adding that she fell to her death from a building.

"Her mother was a cancer patient. She was being treated at the hospital and had died during treatment on Wednesday," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said.

Her father was busy in the formalities when she left the area. She was reported missing since Wednesday. The family hails from Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior police officer said.

Hospital staff noticed the body and informed the police. The block was closed due to which nobody found out about it earlier, police said.

Police said she had called her friends and told them that she was going to kill herself. The body has been recovered and an inquest proceeding is underway.

Mumbai, May 10: A 32-year old man, running a bakery here has been arrested for alleged promotion of products using a tagline that said his firm does not employ Muslims, police said on Sunday.

The man, who is also selling his products online had allegedly said "made by Jains on orders, no Muslim staff" for promotion purposes in his WhatApp group.

A complaint was lodged against him saying the words depicted Muslims in a bad light and Mambalam police registered a case and arrested him, a release said adding a probe was on.

Recently, a man was arrested in Mumbai after he allegedly refused to collect groceries he had ordered online since the delivery person was a Muslim.

Bengaluru, May 6: Central Crime Branch Police have nabbed 71 people involved in various crimes taking advantage of Lock-down which prevents movement of people in the street and seized stolen properties worth about Rs 1.70 crore, official said on Wednesday.

Police said that in all 56 cases were booked. In all 17,312 duplicate Sanitisers, 2000 lts of Chemicals, 18,750 fake Masks, 270 Thermometers and two cars were seized from the arrested culprits.

During the raid godowns where rice and dal meant for free distribution during lock-down were robbed and stored were also seized.
