69% Indians know that economy rigged to favour powerful: Survey

New Delhi, Sept 5: While 40 percent Indians believe that our society is broken, a massive 69 percent feel that the economy is rigged to favour the rich and powerful, a new survey said on Thursday.

Nearly 68 percent Indians also feel that the traditional parties and politicians do not care about them, revealed the global survey by market research firm Ipsos.

"The system is broken, is the overriding view. It favours the rich and powerful and that politicians disregard interests of the common man," said Amit Adarkar, CEO, Ipsos India and Operations Director, Asia Pacific, Ipsos.

"We see affinity for a strong leader, who is unafraid in taking bold decisions (Populism) and there is also a strong desire for Nativism - empowering of locals and natives via jobs and social schemes," he added.

The sentiment is more profound at the global level, with over half of those polled (54 percent), across the 27 markets, believing that the society is broken; with some markets displaying alarming levels of disruption in society.

There is a strong belief in populism and its effects - at least 80 percent of urban Indians polled believe a strong leader can wrest the country back from the rich and powerful.

Further, at least 72 percent Indians believe that India can be fixed by a strong leader, who is willing to break the rules.

"However, skepticism is also seen to be rife, with at least 61 percent Indians complaining that the experts do not understand their lives," the findings showed.

For this survey, Ipsos interviewed a total of 18,528 adults in 27 countries.

Nearly 63 percent Indians exhort employers to hire locals over immigrants, said the survey.

Facebook on Monday launched a new consumer marketing campaign in India titled 'More Together'. India is the first country in the Asia Pacific region where such a campaign is being rolled out.

It is also the first time that Facebook is rolling out a 'high decibel campaign of this stature in India', the company said in a statement.

"India is at the heart of Facebook and one of our focus areas this year is to tell the exciting story of a service that is deeply embedded in the fabric of India," said Ajit Mohan, Vice President and Managing Director, Facebook India.

The campaign would have multiple campaigns over the next few weeks in eight languages and the one will be set in the context of Holi.

Facebook in 2019 introduced a new company logo to further distinguish the company from the Facebook app.

The company recently announced the appointment of Avinash Pant as the Marketing Director for India operations, to drive the consumer marketing efforts across the family of apps.

Unnao, Feb 26: Ever heard of someone wishing a 'bright future' for the dead? In a bizarre incident in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, a village head issued a death certificate with the wish for an elderly man who had died last month.

The incident took place in the Sirwariya village in Asoha block where an elderly person Laxmi Shankar died after a prolonged illness on January 22.

His son went to the village head Babulal and requested him to issue a death certificate that he needed for some financial transactions.

Babulal not only issued the death certificate, but also 'wished' 'a bright future for the deceased' on the document.

The village head wrote in the death certificate -- "Main inke ujjwal bhavishya ki kaamna karta hoon (I wish him a bright future)."

The letter went viral on the social media on Monday after which the village head apologised for the error and issued a new death certificate.

Paris, Jul 2: Several interacting exoplanets have already been spotted by satellites. But a new breakthrough has been achieved with, for the first time, the detection directly from the ground of an extrasolar system of this type.

An international collaboration including CNRS researchers has discovered an unusual planetary system, dubbed WASP-148, using the French instrument SOPHIE at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (CNRS/Aix-Marseille Universite).

The scientists analysed the star's motion and concluded that it hosted two planets, WASP-148b and WASP-148c. The observations showed that the two planets were strongly interacting, which was confirmed from other data.

Whereas the first planet, WASP-148b, orbits its star in nearly nine days, the second one, WASP-148c, takes four times longer. This ratio between the orbital periods implies that the WASP-148 system is close to resonance, meaning that there is enhanced gravitational interaction between the two planets. And it turns out that the astronomers did indeed detect variations in the orbital periods of the planets.

While a single planet, uninfluenced by a second one, would move with a constant period, WASP-148b and WASP-148c undergo acceleration and deceleration that provides evidence of their interaction.

The study will shortly be published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
