7 arrested for Mangaluru apartment robbery

Mangaluru, Dec 5: As many as seven persons have been arrested in connection with the robbery at Abhiman Texas, a residential apartment in Bendoor, Mangaluru.

The arrested have been identified as Rakesh Bonifas D’Souza (37) from Shivabagh Kadri, Ashok Pandhrekar (36) and Ganesh Bapu Parab (37) from Goa, Janardhan Acharya (41) from Kotekar, Chandan Acharya (44) from Mangaladevi , Purushotham Acharya (46) from Kotekar Beeri and Shaheer Mohamed (37) from the same Abhiman Texas apartment where the incident took place three months ago.

According to the police, the accused had entered the flat number 604 of the apartment through the ventilator duct between September 8 and 13. With the help of a lever they broke open the locker in the master bedroom and decamped with gold and diamond worth Rs 35 lakh and Rs 65,000 cash.

A case was registered in the regard at the Mangaluru East police station under section 454, 457 and 380 IPC. A special team formed to probe the case, managed to nab the accused seized the gold ornaments, an Alto car, a Hyundai car, a Bullet motorcycle and the equipment used to melt the gold from their possession.

Bengaluru, Jul 8: In a setback to the State government, the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday stayed the initial ban and the subsequent restrictions imposed on schools against conducting online classes from pre-primary to Class X.

Prima facie the ban and embargo imposed on online education violate Articles 21 and 21A of the Constitutionon the fundamental right to education, the Court said.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Nataraj Rangaswamy passed the interim order staying the operation of Government Orders issued on June 15 and June 27 respectively.

The Bench passed the interim order on the petitions filed by parents of children and several educational institutions questioning the legality of the ban and the restrictions imposed.

However, the Bench made it clear that this order should not be construed that the schools have right to make online education compulsory and can charge fee for offering online education. Also, the schools should not deprive students, who cannot opt for online education, the lost education when the schools reopen on regular basis.

Bengluru, Apr 20: Lockdown restrictions have been extended by a day by the Karnataka government, in an order issued by chief secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar on Sunday.

The order directed all heads of departments, district deputy commissioners and superintendent of policies to "continue to implement the measures presently in force" as per Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines dated April 14, "till the midnight of April 21, 2020."

The MHA guidelines had earlier allowed the state government to relax lockdown norms post-April 20.

Udupi, Apr 9: Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesha said that criminal cases would be booked against owners of houses and sheds who were collecting rent from those, including workers, staying in rented houses.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Mr Jagadeesha said that to prevent the spread of COVID-19, restrictions had been imposed throughout the district under Section 144 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The administration had through an earlier order made it clear that house owners and shed owners should not collect rent from their tenants and workers for March and April.

But the administration had received complaints that some house owners and shed owners were collecting rent despite the order.
