8-month-old rape case: Modi govt not in favor of death penalty

New Delhi, Feb 1: The Central government on Thursday submitted a report before the Supreme Court, saying that the 'Union of India' did not favor death penalty in connection with the rape of an eight-month-old girl by her cousin.

"We are in not favor of death penalty in the eight-month-old girl rape case," Additional Solicitor General (ASG) P. S.

Narasimha told the Apex Court three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra.

The apex court was hearing a petition filed by a lawyer, Alakh Alok Srivastava, seeking harsher punishment which should act as a deterrent for those brutal offenders, allegedly committed sexual offenses with girls in the age group of 0-12 years.

To this, the CJI asked, the petitioner as to what kind of punishment he was seeking.

"There should be death penalty in such kind of cases where the victims are children between the age group of 0 to 12," said Srivastava.

"The punishment should be harsher and should act as a deterrent. It would also send a right message across the society," Srivastava told ANI after the hearing was over.

The apex court also wanted to know from the petitioner lawyer, as to how many cases are pending across India in such types of cases where the victims are in the age group between 0 to 12.

The apex court, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, was hearing the petition filed by Srivastava, seeking a direction from the Top Court for sentencing the brutal offenders, who are involved in such kind of brutal sexual offences with girls in the age group of 0 to 12, to the gallows.

New Delhi, May 11: Former prime minister Manmohan Singh is stable and under observation at the AIIMS here after suffering reaction to a new medication and developing fever, hospital sources said on Monday.

The 87-year-old Congress leader was admitted to the hospital on Sunday evening after he complained of uneasiness. He has now been shifted out of the ICU.

The sources said that Singh had developed a reaction to a new medication and further investigation is being carried on him to rule out other causes of fever.

"Dr Manmohan Singh was admitted for observation and investigation after he developed a febrile reaction to a new medication," the sources said.

"He is being investigated to rule out other causes of fever and is being provided care as needed. He is stable and under care of a team of doctors at the Cardiothoracic Centre of AIIMS," they said.

"All his parameters are fine. He is under observation at the AIIMS," a source close to him has said.

Singh, a senior leader of the opposition Congress, is currently a Member of Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. He was the prime minister between 2004 and 2014.

In 2009, Singh underwent a successful coronary bypass surgery at the AIIMS. A number of leaders expressed have expressed concern over his health and wished him a speedy recovery.

New Delhi, Feb 17: Two alleged criminals were killed in an exchange of fire with the Special Cell of Delhi Police at Pul Pehlad Pur area in New Delhi on Monday morning, officials said.

The encounter took place around 5 am, they said.

Raja Qureshi and Ramesh Bahadur, who were injured during the encounter, were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were declared brought dead by doctors, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) P S Kushwah said.

According to police, the two men were involved in multiple cases of murder and robbery.

New Delhi, Jun 2: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Moody's Investors Service downgrading India's sovereign rating to the lowest investment rate and said that the global rating agency has rated his handling of the country's economy "a step above junk".

"Moody's has rated Modi's handling of India's economy a step above JUNK. Lack of support to the poor and the MSME sector means the worst is yet to come," the Congress leader tweeted citing a media report on Moody's downgrading the nation.

On Monday, Moody's downgraded the country's rating to "Baa3" from "Baa2". This comes at a time when the government is facing criticism from the Opposition over its handling of the COVID-19 situation and measures to boost the economy.

The government has already announced a stimulus package of Rs 20 lakh crore to deal with the situation.
