Aamir's PK creates history, touches Rs 300 crore

January 5, 2015

Mumbai, Jan 5: Aamir Khan and the team of PK have started 2015 with a bang, with the film collection ouching Rs 300 crore on Sunday.

Aamirs PK

It marks a new high for Bollywood as the highest earning (domestic) movie ever.

The exact collection for Sunday was not available when this story went to press.

The average occupancy in cinemas on Sunday was about 60 per cent. UTV Motion Pictures has, thus, both the top-grossing films of 2014, with Kick being the second-highest revenue earner at Rs 233 crore.

PK directed by Rajkumar Hirani and co-produced with Vidhu Vinod Chopra in association with Disney’s UTV Motion Pictures, was released in 4,000 screens across India on December 19.

Starring Anushka Sharma, Boman Irani and Sushant Singh Rajput, it is a satire on wrongdoings of godmen. The cost is pegged at Rs 100 crore.

The record collection also means a hat-trick for Aamir Khan as this is the third time his film has started a revenue club in Bollywood.

In 2008, film Ghajini became the first to cross Rs 100 crore (Rs 190-crore lifetime collection). In 2009, 3 Idiots was the first to breach Rs 200 crore (lifetime collection Rs 202 crore).

In the process, PK has given Aamir Khan his second movie in the top-five grossers of Bollywood. Until now, the record was held by his 2013 action thriller, Dhoom 3, which collected Rs 284 crore in its lifetime.

At number three is Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish 3 (Rs 240 crore) followed by the 2014 Salman Khan starrer, Kick (Rs 233 crore). The fifth on the list is Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express at Rs 227 crore.

The Khans, who have had a very good year at the box office in 2014, dominate the five highest earning films in Bollywood.

Suniel Wadhwa, an independent distributor and a box office analyst, says, “For the third weekend in a row, PK continued to be an unstoppable force at the box office, doing big business over the New year weekend after brisk business during the Christmas weekend.

The drop in week 2 (from week 1) was around 45 per cent.

This is also the biggest second-week collection by a movie, surpassing Dhoom 3’s second week record, which was Rs 65 crore net box office, while PK did Rs 95 crore.”

Adding to the monies will be collections from the first phase of release in foreign countries.

The film was released in the traditional Bollywood territories abroad — North America, the UK, West Asia, Pakistan and Australia.

PK has collected Rs 134 crore till Saturday with many territories yet to report the final collections for the weekend.

It has become the biggest Bollywood import in North America and Australia this year. It was released in 840-plus screens abroad.

With this, the film’s worldwide gross collection (before tax) is set to be in excess of Rs 600 crore, the highest in Bollywood so far, surpassing Dhoom 3’s collection of Rs 550 crore.

Hollywood star Joaquin Phoenix finally ended his dry run at the Oscars as he picked up the best actor trophy for his performance in and as "Joker" at the 92nd Academy Awards.

The 45-year-old actor had earlier bagged a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his turn as a failed, unhinged stand-up comedian who descends into chaos.

In a lengthy and rambling speech, Phoenix touched upon racism, climate change and gender inequality. He also remembered his brother River Phoenix, who died of a drug overdose at the age of 23 in 1993.

"When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric. He said, 'run to the rescue with love and peace will follow'," Phoenix said. At the Academy Awards and the entire Hollywood award season, Phoenix had emerged as an undisputed frontrunner even though he was up against the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio ("Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"), Adam Driver ("Marriage Story"), "Antonio Banderas ("Pain & Glory") and Jonathan Pryce ("The Two Popes").

An Oscar had eluded Phoenix for the most part of his career, despite his successful collaborations with Ridley Scott ("Gladiator"), James Mangold ("Walk The Line") and Paul Thomas Anderson ("The Master"), all of which had earned him nominations.

But as Arthur Fleck aka The Joker, Phoenix finally managed to break that jinx and became the second actor to win an Oscar for playing the DC comic book villain after the posthumous best supporting actor win to Heath Ledger in 2008.

As Joker, Phoenix took a deep dive into character, capturing its essence as well as maniacal spirit in both body and soul.

He lost 52 pounds to get into the physicality of Fleck and turned to a pathological disorder to get his distinct laughter right.

Phillips wrote the part keeping Phoenix in mind though the actor took some convincing to play the role.

Phoenix started the film's festival circuit tour on a positive note at Cannes last year that followed by stops at Venice and Toronto.

The film had also courted controversies, owing to its theme of gun violence in the movie as well as Phoenix's temperamental press tour that saw him walking out of an interview midway.

But critics and the fans loved the actor's riveting turn in the movie and his pointed speeches.

At the Golden Globes, he called out the industry for its insensitivity towards climate change and pulled up his peers for using private jets for travel, while at the SAGs, he joked how he would always lose a role to DiCaprio and asked Christian Bale to deliver a bad performance for once in his career.

In his acceptance speech at the BAFTAs, Phoenix acknowledged the lack of diversity in the nominations, calling himself a part of the problem. Phoenix's career most praised performances include "Signs ", "We Own the Night", "Two Lovers", "The Immigrant", "Her", "You Were Never Really Here" and "Inherent Vice".
