ACB filed FIR without proper sanction: Yeddyurappa

Bengaluru, Sept 19: BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa submitted to the high court on Monday that there are more than 32 complaints pending before the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) filed against the chief minister and other ministers, where the FIR has not been filed since the sanction to prosecution has not been granted.

However, in his case, without prior sanction from the appointing authority, an FIR was filed violating the conditions of the ACB notification, which seeks sanction from the appropriate authority before filing the FIR.

Senior counsel C V Nagesh, appearing for Yeddyurappa, said there have been cases filed against the chief minister and the ministers with regard to the Hublot watch controversy, the Arkavathi Layout denotification, liquor licences, issuing of tenders among others. He said there is unwarranted harassment and, allegations and frivolous complaints were filed before the ACB. Nagesh said there is a legal bar on registration of the FIR itself.

Senior counsel Ravivarma Kumar, appearing for ACB, took exception, stating that Nagesh was making endless submission, going beyond the scope of the case. Nagesh said he was only arguing his interim prayer. Justice Aravind Kumar, who is hearing the petition for the past two weeks, said on a lighter note, if there was anything left to be heard in the main prayer.

The counsel were making their submissions in a petition filed by Yeddyurappa, seeking directions to quash two FIRs filed by the ACB. Two FIRs were filed against him in the case of ‘fake-denotification’ of 257 acres of land, part of the Shivaram Karanth Layout in Bengaluru North. ACB sought more time to make its submission. The judge adjourned the hearing to Wednesday.

Bengaluru, Jan 23: Expressing shock over the blast which left him and his supporters injured yesterday, Shantinagar MLA NA Haris today said that the incident cannot be brushed aside as a firecracker blast and appealed to the state government to inquire into the incident.

Recovering from the injuries sustained on his leg, Haris was discharged from St Philomena's Hospital on Thursday afternoon.

Interacting with mediapersons outside his residence in Shantinagar, Haris said, “It wasn’t a cracker but a ball-like object that was hurled at me. Since my childhood, I have been seeing crackers and the object that was thrown at me was certainly not a cracker. It had splinters and hard objects.”

He said, “I have been representing the constituency for over 12-years and had no rivalry with anyone. Barring political ideology during elections, all the leaders in our constituency have been cooperative with each other. Yet, we do not know what the intention was or who was behind the incident.”

Revealing that home minister Basavaraj Bommai had called him to enquire about his condition at the hospital Haris said, “I have also briefed the home minister and explained to him what exactly happened. I have full faith in the police and will cooperate with the police during the investigation.” Haris said that doctors have advised him three to four-days of rest.

Bengaluru, Jul 1: The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert and forecasted heavy rains for three coastal districts and 12 more in the south interior Karnataka region, an official said on Tuesday afternoon.

"Thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over south interior Karnataka from Tuesday to Wednesday," said a Met official.

For Bengaluru city, the Met department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with light rain for the next three days.

Coastal Karnataka -- Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts have been issued a yellow alert for the next two days with thundershowers and gusty winds.

Winds blowing at speed of 40-50 km per hour are expected on the coast and the Met department warned fishermen against venturing into the sea.

Meanwhile, heavy showers on Sunday night in Vijayapura district gave rise to flash floods in the Doni river and Sogali stream.

An overflowing Doni river submerged the Talikote - Hadaginal bridge, a remnant from the colonial era, and also submerged some agricultural lands. Only recently, these agricultural lands were sown with toor dal plants.

Similarly, many SSLC students also struggled to cross the bridge to reach their examination centres on Monday.

Many houses were also flooded due to the rainfall at Nalatwad and Talikote taluk. Muddebihal, Basavana Bagewadi and Sindagi taluks also witnessed heavy rainfall.

A 40-year-old farmer from Dharwad district was washed away in the Tuppari Halla stream, which is prone to flood during the monsoon season.

Likewise, a truck carrying cotton also got washed away in a stream in Yadgir district.

"There is an offshore trough and a circulation, because of which rain will continue in the coastal area. Only Malnad has not got sufficient rain this year. Probably after two days, Malnad may get some rains," Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) Director Srinivas Reddy said. Otherwise, entire state got normal rainfall, said Reddy, though it is not active over Malnad.
