January 8, 2014

Amitabh_BachchanNew Delhi, Jan 8: After collaborating with the United Nations for polio eradication, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan today said his focus next is women emancipation.

Bachchan, 71, will now work as UN ambassador for Girl Child and hopes of emulating the success that they had with the polio eradication campaign, the actor said.

"Having worked doggedly for the last many years to eradicate Polio from the country, as UN ambassador for this fight, we have been able to put off this endemic list. By end of 2014, we shall be a polio free country. Feel proud to have contributed to this very essential national cause.

"Now as UN ambassador for the Girl Child, I do hope we can bring about the same changes as we did for Polio - rid the country of the malaise of discrimination against women," Bachchan posted on Facebook.

The acting stalwart was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in April 2005 and has since then featured in many advertisements and campaigns to raise awareness about polio disease.
