Alert driver saves 20 passengers as moving bus catches fire

Bengaluru, Aug 16: An alert KSRTC driver averted a major mishap after a multi-axle bus caught fire in the wee hours of Wednesday. All 20 passengers on board the bus escaped unhurt.

The incident took place when the Bengaluru-bound buscoming from Tirupathi was moving along KR Puramhanging flyover around 5am. As soon as the bus reached the flyover, bus driver Ambari noticed smoke emitting from the engine through the rear-view mirror. He immediately stopped the vehicle and asked all passengers to alight. Panicky passengers rushed out of the bus leaving some of the baggage behind.

The bus was almost gutted as the fire spread rapidly, stalling traffic on the flyover for sometime. By then, the driver had alerted fire officials who reached the spot and doused the flames. Police said no complaint has been registered.

Kozhikode, Jun 26: A man, who had returned from Bahrain on Thursday and has been under quarantine at his house in Villyapallai near here, has been stabbed on his arm by an unidentified person.

Police sources said the assailant, with a masked face, had ransacked the man's house by break-opening the door at midnight lat night and stabbed Lijeesh on his arm and fled from the scene.

The nearby residents took Lijeesh to a nearby hospital and was put back on quarantine.

Visakhapatnam, Jun 30: Two people were killed and four others were taken ill after benzene gas leaked at a pharmaceutical company at Parawada near here early on Tuesday morning, official sources said.

The situation was now under control as the leak was restricted to one unit in the Sainor Life Sciences company, the sources said.

The two killed were senior employees of the company, they said.

The injured persons have been admitted to a hospital in Gajuwaka, with one of them being put on ventilator support, the sources added.

District Collector V Vinay Chand and Police Commissioner R K Meena visited the company to take stock of the situation.

The cause of the leak that took place in a reactor unit at the plant is yet to be established.

The incident comes nearly two months after 11 people were killed and over 1000 taken ill after gas leak at a chemical plant here.

Nagpur, Apr 5: A 23-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in Imambada area in Nagpur on Saturday due to financial distress, police said.

Nikhil Gavhane, who worked in a grocery shop, hanged himself as he had taken money from a person and was stressed over repayment, an official said.

"He was depressed since a week," the Imambada police station official said.
