Amit Shah likens Oppn parties to cats, dogs, snakes, mongoose

Mumbai, Apr 7: In a statement that is bound to generate political heat, BJP President Amit Shah on Friday likened Opposition parties to dogs, snakes, cats and mongoose.

"The countdown of the 2019 (Lok Sabha) election has begun Opposition parties are coming together against BJP. I had once heard, when there is a massive flood, trees and shrubs are washed away, but tall banyan trees survive," Shah said in reference to the political surge of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.

"Then, snakes take shelter in the banyan tree, mongoose climb on it and so as dogs, cats, cheetahs and lions….because of the fear of the (flood) water below," Shah said addressing a mammoth rally at the MMRDA Grounds coinciding with the 38th foundation day celebrations of the BJP.

"Because of Modi (popularity) they are feared and the Opposition parties are teaming up like cats, dogs, snakes and mongoose to fight elections," he said. Later, at a news conference at a nearby Sofitel Hotel, Shah tried to clarify his statement. "I have said in a different context it was in reference to ideologies... I apologise if anyone is hurt. I did not want to take names," he said.

However, he elaborated that what he meant was the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party coming together, Congress and TMC getting closer and Congress and TDP getting together.

It may be recalled, last month, former Congress President and ex-UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi had hosted a dinner for Opposition leaders at her New Delhi residence. Also several Opposition leaders are meeting each other individually and collectively - as the next general elections approach.

At the rally, Shah also came down heavily on Rahul Gandhi, who in his rallies have been repeatedly asking for the performance card of the Modi government.

"Rahul Baba...you are asking what Modi ji has done in the last 4 years...The country want to ask you....What your party did when it was in power for four generations," Shah said.Referring to the recent loss in by-elections, Modi said: "You have won 2 seats, we have won 11 states."

Shah, a former Gujarat minister, said that the "golden period" of BJP is yet to come."We will win the 2019 Lok Sabha elections...We will in West Bengal and Odisha Assemby elections and return to power in Maharashtra...that would be the golden period," he said virtually kick-starting the campaign for BJP for 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Mumbai.

May 14: Customs officials on Wednesday intercepted China-bound consignments of raw material for masks, misdeclared as packing materials for pouches, in large quantities, a senior official said.

It has also seized multiple shipments containing 5.08 lakh masks, 57 litres of sanitiser and 952 PPE kits bound for the US, the UK and the UAE, the official said.

The export of such goods is prohibited by the government in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"On the basis of specific intelligence, 2,480 kg of raw material for masks was intercepted by air cargo export, Delhi Customs. The goods were misdeclared as packing materials for pouches and were being illegally attempted to be smuggled/ exported to China," he said. 

These goods are prohibited for export as per the latest guidelines issued by the Directorate General of Foreign trade (DGFT), he said, adding that investigation into the case is under progress.

In another catch, the air cargo officers intercepted multiple shipments containing 5.08 lakh masks, 57 litres of sanitiser in 950 bottles and 952 PPE kits at the courier terminal in New Delhi. These were attempted to be smuggled or exported out of the country, the official said.

"These goods are also prohibited for export," he added. 

These items were being illegally exported to the United States, United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates. "No arrests have been made so far," the official said.

New Delhi, Aug 9: Indian on Sunday achieved a grim milestone after recording the highest single-day spike of 64,399 coronavirus cases, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

As many as 861 deaths were reported in the country in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative toll to 43,379.

With the new cases, the country's coronavirus count has reached 21,53,011 including 6,28,747 active cases and 14,80,885 cured/discharged/migrated.

Maharashtra has 1,47,355 active coronavirus cases, the highest in the country.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 7,19,364 samples were tested on August 8 while over 2.41 crores samples so far have been tested in the country.

New Delhi, Feb 18: Election strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor on Tuesday questioned the Nitish Kumar government's development model, even as he sneered at the chief minister for making ideological compromises to stay in an alliance with the BJP.

Kishor, who has been vocal about his opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), said Kumar needs to spell out whether he is with the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi or those who support Nathu Ram Godse.

"Nitish ji has always said that he cannot leave the ideals of Gandhi, JP and Lohiya... At the same time, how can he be with the people who support the ideology of Godse? Both cannot go together. If you want to stay with the BJP, I don't have any problem with it but you cannot be on both sides," he said.

"There has been a lot of discussion between me and Nitish-ji on this. He has his thought process and I have mine. There have been differences between him and me that the ideologies of Godse and Gandhi cannot stand together. As the leader of the party you have to say which side you are on," he added.

In a direct assault on Kumar's model of governance, Kishor said Bihar was the poorest state in 2005 and continues to be so.

"There has been development in Bihar during the last 15 years, but the pace has not been as it should have," he added.
