Another DYFI activist held for arson

February 13, 2017

Kasargod, Feb 13: Yet another Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) loyalist was arrested in connection with the recent violence witnessed at nearby Bovikkanam, where a car of a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activist was set on fire and a jewellery outlet run by him was vandalised.

Arrest1A police team led by Adhur sub-inspector A. Santhosh Kumar arrested Salman Harris, 27, a resident of nearby Povval locality, on Saturday evening at Bovikkanam, taking the total number of arrests in connection with the incident to nine.

The incident on January 11 took place after a group of DYFI workers took out a procession hailing the January-10 Supreme Court ruling to disburse the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)-recommended compensation to eligible endosulfan victims within three months.

The court was disposing of a plea filed by the DYFI after over six years of legal battle.

The violence was triggered by DYFI activists’ manhandling of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) loyalist Bharathraj, who was moving in his autorickshaw.

Jewellery vandalised

In the melee, the DYFI workers set afire the car of Vamanchachari, a VHP activist, before vandalising his jewellery outlet.

The police have registered cases under IPC Section 308 (attempt to murder) and 435 (mischief by fire explosive) against the arrested persons.

They were on the lookout for four more persons, including a minor, the senior police official said.
