Arun Jaitley cremated with full state honours, son Rohan performs last rites

New Delhi, Aug 25: Former finance minister Arun Jaitley was cremated with full state honours at the Nigambodh Ghat here on Sunday.

Jaitley's last rites were performed by his son Rohan Jaitley while several of his family members were also present at the cremation ground. It started to rain as soon as the funeral pyre was lit by the late leader's son. 

A number of politicians attended the last rites of the late BJP leader. Those in attendance included - Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP working president JP Nadda, Ramesh Pokhriyal, Smriti Irani, Ramdas Athawale, Hans Raj Hans, Gautam Gambhir, Anurag Thakur and Congress leader Kapil Sibal, among others.

Several incumbent BJP chief ministers including Devendra Fadnavis, B S Yediyurappa, Trivendra Singh Rawat and former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan were also present at Nigambodh Ghat to bid adieu to the party strongman.

Earlier, leaders paid floral tributes to Jaitley at the Ghat before the last rites. Vice-president Naidu was seen in tears as he bid the last adieu to his "friend". 

Minister Ramvilas Paswan, Baba Ramdev and many other personalities were also present at the cremation ground.

Before his final journey, Jaitley's mortal remains were kept at BJP headquarters for people to pay tributes. Several friends and colleagues remember their associations with the political stalwart as they walked past his casket wrapped in a tricolour.
 
Jaitley passed away in New Delhi on Saturday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He was 66.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 11: The effective handling of Covid-19 pandemic by the Kerala Government has received a big endorsement in the International media with the latest being a report in Washington Post which suggests that the State’s success could prove instructive to the entire country.

The Washington Post quoted Kerala Health Minister K K Shailaja Teacher as saying “We hoped for the best but planned for the worst. Now, the curve has flattened, but we cannot predict what will happen next week.”

"The Minister said six states had reached out to Kerala for advice. She, however, noted that it might not be easy to replicate Kerala’s lessons elsewhere," according to the Minister's office quoting the report here on Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Ayodhya to lay the foundation of the Ram temple. He participated in the bhoomi poojan rituals at the temple site and offered prayers. He will shortly lay the foundation of the temple with a sliver brick.

From Varanasi to Tamil Nadu, many devotees have sent gifts for the ceremony, like silver bricks and coins.

Special prayers were started on Monday and will culminate with the PM laying the foundation stone for the temple. The city has been decorated with paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana. The Uttar Pradesh government has also made elaborate security arrangement for the event.

Apart from the state police, the NSG commandos have also been kept on stand-by. The invitations for the ceremony have been kept limited due to the coronavirus pandemic. Veteran BJP leaders LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi will witness the event from New Delhi via video-conferencing.

New Delhi, Mar 25: The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in India rose to 562, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday.
This includes 512 active cases, while 40 infected people have already been cured or discharged.
The Union Health Ministry said that total deaths due to the disease now stand at 9, as the second death reported in Delhi is COVID-19 negative. One patient has also migrated due to the infection.
The Central government has taken several steps to contain the rapid spread of the virus including the screening 15,24,266 passengers at the airports.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.
In a televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Modi said that it is vital to break the chain of the disease and experts have said that at least 21 days are needed for it.
The Prime Minister, who had also addressed the nation last week, said the lockdown has drawn a "Lakshman Rekha" in every home and people should stay indoors for their own protection and for that of their families.
